Which is better, 15-20 minutes of running/jogging or 1 hour of brisk walking?

Low intensity cardio (most stationary bike and aerobics programs, etc) has been proven to be near-useless when it comes to losing fat.

On the other hand, high intensity cardio (jogging, sprinting) does wonders. Try jogging for 20 minutes a day, and watch the pounds melt away. Or you can continue taking your brisk walks and pretend they're actually doing something just like every other person who's too lazy to put more effort into it.
Bullsh!t meat head. Power Walking or any form of exercise where you have an elevated heart rate will enabe you to lose wieght with a proper diet.

No, he's right, you will not see much effect from simply walking. It is healthy, it's all good and whatnot, but you will not shed pounds. It does NOT elevate your heart rate enough to lose any significant amount of calories.. where as you can almost double your heart rate by jogging/running, it makes a big difference.

A good routine would be to jog for about 20 minutes, taking 3-5 minutes of those to simply sprint/run fast. You're just trying to keep your BPM up.

I have to disagree.

I've used Power Walking/Race Walking to lose a LOT of weight. Each time I had a baby, I had a good 25-30 pounds to lose, and this is how I did it. You can't chat while you are race walking. You are focused and pumping! It's a whole body exercise and it has a specific form and technique. It looks kind of silly but it feels like flying. :)

The key is to walk fast enough to keep your heart rate up. I WALK faster than most people JOG! It's all in the technique. I don't jog because my breasts don't care for it. Sometimes I run, sort of race walk and then run, race walk and then run.

But race walking IS good for losing weight.

You won't lose weight from walking? So what in hell do you think happened to the 35+ pounds I lost? Did the Fat fairy come and steal them or what? :p

That can work up a sweat if you hustle, and pay well enough. There must be hundreds of things to do that would be far more productive!

That's kinda what I was thinking. Walking is for women and old people, running is for those with a penis. :)
Or those like you with penis envy.

I have chronic back pain from a weight training injury and I found that power walking with hand wieghts enables me to keep in shape and keep well toned. I'm not talking about strolling but a fast paced walk in which your heart rate is elevated and you work up a good sweat.

Apparently you missed my old people inclusion the first time around.

Whatever motivates you man.... You're only 9 years off with the age though, and it isn't 6. Want to have a sperm count competition?

Great strategy. Amcdonald also.

But the fat is proportionally replaced with a strong desire to look like a retard in a mall arcade.

Actually the walking seems to be working out for me. I usually play basketball about 4-5 times per week so I did'nt think the walking would do much for me, I was surprised that doing some power/race walking really is a nice workout. However my goal is still to eventually be able to do a hard run for an hour.

No arguing that running hard for an hour is way more benificial than Power walking for an hour. Try Powerwalking with some hand wieghts is you want to up your heart rate.

Brisk walks do next to nothing for a cardio work out. You are not stressing your heart hence not training it.

Walks are good if you want to burn some calories, but don't expect to burn fat or get into any good shape just by walking.

Obviously you have never power walked (or had a lucid thought in your life)

There's also the small matter of looking silly carrying girl weights while "power-walking"
Its the workout equivalent of inline roller-blading.
IMHO Only hot girls can get away with either of these.
But if you are obese I guess self-image doesn't matter too much at the moment.

Only insecure little boys who haven't figured out if they are homosexual or not are insecure about their masculinity to the point that they worry what other people think.

What doesn't matter is if people think you look silly. ;)

Running>walking>jogging

Jogging is the worse. When you are actually RUNNING at a steady clip, you have good form and you aren't putting excess wear and tear on your joints and connective tissue. You raise your heart rate while keeping the stress on your body to a some what low level.

When you jog, you are putting undue stress on your joints. You pound hard, flail your appendages about, and basically just hurting yourself. It's those people who are clunking along at 10 minute mile pace that are just doing themselves more harm than good. Just walk if you are at this level. Burn off some pounds, throw in some short sprints to get yourself accustomed to running and then work your way into it.

From the bodybuilding.com database:

sexual activity, active vigorous effort = 146 calories/hour <- this must be missing at least a digit I think, or do they mean with R.H.?
walking, 4.5 mph, level, firm surface, very, very brisk = 615 calories/hour
running, 10 mph (6 min/mile) = 1562 calories/hour
running, 6 mph (10 min/mile) = 976 calories/hour

you guys are all wrong. i read recently on an article at www.askmen.com

they said running and walking the same distance burns the SAME amount of calories. you wont get the faster metabolism benefits you get with running if you walk BUT you will burn the same amount of calories. so taking 1 hour to walk burns the same amount of calories if you ran that distance, of course, itd be shorter time running, but same distance.

Um, typically the whole point of working out is to attract the opposite (or same) sex. This is much easier to do when you don't have 5-pound weights in your hands. Believe it or not.
