I'm ordered a DFI NF4 (939) board, and I need to decide which CPU i'll put in there. My choice is either A64 3000+ or 3200+. I read a while ago an article in AT about how well the 939 3000+ overclocked but i don't know much about the 3200+. Which of these 2 are better? is it worth the $40 extra for a 3200+?

oh, btw, what HSF is best for OC A64 939?

I would say that it's pretty much a crap shoot. I've seen many 3000's reach 2.6ghz and above. My 3200+ won't go past 2.4ghz. :(

They both theoretically may end up going to the same point with the same vcore...It is the chance you play ocing...YMMV...Your Mileage May Vary...Your other components in your system can be just as valuable and hold you back no matter the chip..

that being said the 9x multi with the 3000+ requires a bit better of a motherboard since high fsb will be the must....The money you may save in the 3000+ over the 3200+ may be spent on the mobo....really depends on what motherboard you have already been thinking of....

you can try stock cooling intially and then reassess your needs after you see how far you can go and what the temps are

Thanks for the replies.

The mobo i ordered is the DFI NF4-Ultra, which is supposed to be one of the best overclocking mobo available. The memory i got is Geil Ultra PC3200 C2-6-3-3, if that helps. If they are very similar in overclocking then i would save $40 for a better hard drive.

with the fsb directly affect the ddr ram speed? if i do not plan on using a ram divider, would it be better to get a 3200+?

I have the 3200+ and it reaches 2.6ghz, about the same as most good 3000+.

The 3200+ is probabally better if you want to run ram 1:1 because of the 10x multi, but based on a pure CPU overclock they are most likely about the same.

I'd say go for the 3000+. It will reach the same overclock as a 3200 would on a good overclocking motherboard like yours.

Don't be afraid to use a ram divider with the athlon 64's. They aren't effected much by less bandwith or higher latencies.
