What is the best option for a router.
1)Dlink DI-704 (I think) 4 port switch router...no print server
2)One of the linux box routers hooked into a switch.......wich software should I run for it? Is there one that offers a print server?

I'm looking for one that offers the most performance for internet access/games. And offers decent protection against intruision......I need the ability for DCHP client for the incomming net connection (BBInsight sucks, but its a one horse town)

Thanks

If I were you, I would just get the router. It's easier to set up and has a NAT firewall. But I think the second option would provide better security because of the Linux firewall. I'm not a Linux expert, but I'm pretty sure you can just hook up the printer to the Linux box and share it among your other computers. Hope this helps.

use www.clarkconnect.org
its cool

includes snort for intrusion detection, i've had cable for only 1 week and it has detected 1953 different attacks, of twelve different types

and you don't have to be a linux guru to setup/use clarkconnnect :)

Well its a question of wich to use......I already have the routers and enough spare parts to make a linux box.

The question is wich provides more speed for the network. I feel that the D-link router adds latency to my internet connection. Plus it doesnt have a print server....do any of the linux boxes have that capability

freesco.org and clarkconnect include print server, other probably do to
and if you did a custom linux setup, you could setup print server

in my opinion, the amount of "horsepower" required for routing on small LAN's is so little that any of these solutions would be fine, unless you have a large network, routing packets doesn't take much juice at all
