I want to purchase a 4 ports internet gateway router. I've been thinking getting a Netgear RT314. Any other suggestions that is best bang for bucks?

They are the same price. Which brand is better? Support, reputation wise?

There is NO Best.

There is what fits my needs, and my budget.

Scroll a little down, and look at the right side.

Under the heading Popular Reviews, you will find reviews of the Major Cable/DSL Routers.

I've been using the Linksys for nearly a year with ZERO problems. But, the Netgear is also an excellent product. You won't go wrong in either case. Reach in to your pocket, grab a coin and flip it.

I think I will go with Netgeat's RT314. From the review, it says it's faster.

Did the reviewer test say, 20 of each? If not, there is no validity to any assertions made. Reviews are a good place to get basic information, but that's the extent of their value.

In addition to being a standard router, the SMC Barricade also has a print server and a 4/8 port switch integrated. The only other one that I have used was the Dlink Residential Gateway. Avoid that one at all costs, but the SMC has been excellent.

You want to buy Hardware:

1. Manufacture Information; Can not be the decisive factor since it is tainted by the need of the Manufacture to sell.

2. Review information; Can not be the decisive factor since they test only one sample (and many times this is a sample given by the manufacture for review.)

3. A user information; Can not be the decisive factor since it is tainted by the need of self justifying his/her decision making, and a lot of time it is based on a sample of one.

So what you do?

You make yourself knowledgeable of the above three factors, you take a risk, you buy, and then you can tell every one that "you are the greatest".

Disclaimer: This of course does not include the ?professional plumbers? that has the chance to use hardware in situations that are more objective
