Which HS/F for a AMD 1800+

I am going to be getting a Abit KR7A and an AMD 1800+ and I am wondering what would be good for overclocking? I am not looking for something too expensive, no more than $30. Also what kind of success have people had o/cing the 1800?

Pal 8045 if you intend to leave that CPU in there for at least a year. Otherwise, it's too much trouble. I stand by the SK6 with your choice of 80mm fan depending on what your needs are. I don't overclock much and prefer quiet systems so I stick with low-noise Panaflos.
 
I believe the retail heatsink fan is just as easy to put on and remove as the SK6. If you're not going to overclock, the retail will do although it may be a little noisier than the SK6 and a quiet 80mm fan.

I like Newegg.com like just about everyone else. You can get a bare SK6 there or with a fan but I'd sugget putting a 80mm fan on it instead of the 60mm fans that are sold with it.

If you want the quietest solution or something that you can use if you decide to overclock, get the SK6. Although I'd suggest getting the retail version of the XP for warranty (if you're not going to unlock it and void it) and you can give the retail heatsink fan a try before purchasing the SK6.

The best / highest performance HSF is Thermalright AX7.
Alpha Pal 8045 cannot beat this one. Here's the equation for ya:

Thermalright AX7 > Alpha Pal 8045 > Thermalright SK6.

Don't get me wrong, the SK6 is indeed very good HSF also. Check out the AX-7 before you dish out your cash. Read the review(s) of it.

Whether you want that or SK6, 3DCOOL.com has em both. Have fun deciding.
 
Yes, the AX-7 is definitely better than the SK6 and just about anything else if you want the best although you should make sure it fits your motherboard first. I don't think it fits all mobos. As for www.3dcool.com, the SK6 there is waaay overpriced although the AX-7 is priced the same as at newegg ($28) IF shipping is reasonable.
 
Yippp... you're right. It is indeed overpriced. I haven't re-checked the price on the Sk6 at 3dcool.com for several months and they haven't dropped the price even one bit!! lol yes, newegg would be good place to try.
 
if you don't mind some noise... get the CoolerMaster HHC-001 copper HSF.. it's $31 USD at KDcomputers.com and it's in stock.. this cooler bests everything (no lie) except the Swiftech MC462...

if you dont like noise, you can get a TaiSol with the worlds best clip and a quiet fan, for around $22. they cool OK too!
 
I have to second the opinion of the Cooler Master HHC-001.
It is currently running 15 degrees C over room temperature on my Athlon 1.4 @ 1.6 Ghz. (This is under full load with SETI while I surf).
Just make sure that you have a good 3 -4 CM of clearance b/w the left side of your socket and your chipset coolers.

I third the hhc-001. My cpu/system temps are in my signature, they seem to be pretty good. Sure, it seems loud for a week, but then you just stop hearing it. It's great for overclocking too. I barely notice any difference when I have my cpu at 2000+ (mines at 1.69 gig) compared to 1800+. As of right now, I have not increased core voltage at all and it runs rock solid. Next stop, 2100+...
 
So should I go with a Thermaltake Volcano 7+? I would sacrifice noise for OC'ing ability, and I can always turn it down if I want. Should I rethink my choice to go with the TT? Its going to be with an Athlon XP 1800+ w/ Soyo MOBO. Thanks.
 
Safe bet = SK6. Period. You can change the whole darn fan when you want. Great all copper heatsink you can match with a blower or a quiet fan.

Oh, and you can use 60mm fans or 80mm fans. What else is there to know? 🙂
 
The AX-7 is $27 at KDC and they don't rape you with shipping costs. Good thing with the AX-7 is you can chose the fan you want. Although that does add to the cost.

Other good ones are the Cak II, V7+ and the HHC-001. All are better than the sk6 but all have airplane-loud fans. The V7+ I tested is only quiet on low setting. Somewhat tolerable on medium, but louder than I like. On high setting get eady for lift-off.

A real good low cost solution is the Dr Thermal TI-V77L which SVC has for just $14. And it's very quiet.
 
Consider the Taisol 760092 as well. Although often overlooked, they work well- the performance scales nicely with whatever fan you choose. The stock fan isn't loud, and the sink itself doesnt clog as easily as some of the micro-fin copper coolers.

Nexfan has some interesting and inexpensive coolers, particularly the copper Evercools and the Galaxy Monster. Haven't tried them myself, but I wouldn't hesitate if I needed one right now.... The price on the Galaxy is ridiculously cheap, and the sink appears to be the same as the svc gc68.

 
i used a Alpha PAL8045 with a sunon 43 cfm fan on a 1800+ xp which was overclocked to 1725 mhz at 1.85 volts. Idle tempuratures was 34c and full load was about 44c. the only thing i didnt like was the mounting setup that was provided. I changed that to studs much like water blocks use this made it easier to tension the heatsink properly.

For my AMD XP 2000+ I use peltier cooling systems on both of them. Im running a dual XP system and both of my CPU's stay around 1 Celsius....<----not a typo. I got each of these new for only $50 a piece, so I'm sure you can find some used ones for under $30.
