Which headphones to get?

280s.

Do not even think about the V600s. The V6s (or 7506s, essentially the same thing) are worthy competitors for the 280s. The V600s aren't worth the price they cost for Sony to make them.

Ugh, Sony...

The 280s are nice, but fill a certain niche, and if you don't fit into that niche there migth be better phones for you... What music do you like? Do you want portability? What's your budget? Do you want good isolation? How long might you want to use them for at a time?

Grados or Senns depending on use and musical preferences. Those particularly Sony's suck. If you can get V6s instead of V600s, those would be good too.

Everytime I see a thread on headphones, I just gotta jump in and say I love my Sennheisers (HD 595). Killer response and very comfortable. Save your green stamps and get the best - Sennheisers 😀.

I was looking at similar headphones and haven't seen good reviews on the Sony Vx00 series. If you're looking for Sonys, try and find the V6.

I have some cheap Sennheiser and they are really comfortable and sound great. You can't go wrong with either but I would go for the Sennheiser.
Are you just after the headphones or a headset (with mic)?

Wow, loads of people calling for open Senns.

Assuming you need closed headphones (since both of the ones in the original post were), the 280s are still much better than the V600, and provide a different, though not necessarily better, sound than the V6s.

These other Senns are nice to varying degrees (though the 590s recommended earlier are pretty bad for the price), but none are sealed. If you need sealed, then the 280s are the best in the sub-$100 US category (the V6s might run in there). Under $125 US are the A500s.

My experience with Senns are that you need an amp to drive them... whereas the Grado's SR80 i had, worked just fine without an amp.

hd555's aren't really in the same category as the 280's. taking the 555's to a LAN would not be a good idea. basically, 280 for gaming, 555 for music. imo, if you are going to get the 555, might as well go hd600.

Whooooooa dude, the HD600s are $349.99+, and HD555s are $149.99, but I can get them for $129.99 shipped. Does anyone know if the HD555s can block out sound as well as the 280s? IMO, the effect of listening to music is ruined a bit if you can hear your dog in the background.
