hd555's aren't really in the same category as the 280's. taking the 555's to a LAN would not be a good idea. basically, 280 for gaming, 555 for music. imo, if you are going to get the 555, might as well go hd600.

hehe this guy knows whats up... same phones, similar sound cards, same IC as mine! and he likes anime too 😉

OP, between two cans you listed, definitely the hd-280. if you must have closed phones at a decent price, check out ultrasones.

An amp isn't strictly necessary with the 555s, but the 600s would benefit greatly from one, that's a good chunk of extra money... BTW most high end phones are open (no isolation), if it's that important to you OP, you can eliminate the 555s and 497s, as well as all Grado phones, from your list of contenders - they're all open. The 580s, 600s, and 650s are as well, for that matter, though I gather you're not looking to spend that much regardless.

Whooooooa dude, the HD600s are $349.99+, and HD555s are $149.99, but I can get them for $129.99 shipped. Does anyone know if the HD555s can block out sound as well as the 280s? IMO, the effect of listening to music is ruined a bit if you can hear your dog in the background.

well sennheiser always posts ridiculous prices. used FS prices are

hd555 - unlikely to find used, but i'd guess ~$100
*hd600 - $150-$160
*hd650 - $280-$300

* headphone amp recommended.

VanillaH: I see you watch all the anime 😱. no GSD?

What is a good store to buy audio equipment? All I know of is NewEgg and J&R...😕

BTW downxp thanks for the prices, I'm off to FS/OT

just FYI, i got my hd-650 in pristine shape (not even burned in all the way) for $420 including silver dragon which costs $200 by itself. sold the SD for $155 ($175 - paypal fees - shipping to spain) and got me headphile replacement cable... so in the end i paid $420-$155+$70 = $335 for a spanking new hd-650 with good set of cables. while i vastly preferred the headphile cable to SD, i am dying to try out zu mobius 🙂

Stick with the Senneisers. Newegg will be cheaper than J and R. If undecided, just listen to both. The Senneisers will win hands down.

if you want a brand new hd-650, ebuyer is much cheaper than other prices... but you are looking to spend AT LEAST $100 more on amplification if you go with these cans.
