I am also looking inti an 80GB WD with 8MB cache. My friend just recently got a WD 40GB 8MB cache and it is dead silent, you hardly hear it over the fans at all. Everything loads up pretty quick too. So, my vote goes for the WD.

gotta break-in the hardware a few months. Let's see if it goes quiet then.

I prefer maxtor, had a bunch of maxtors drives and none ever died on me. Can't say the same for seagate though, had two of their drives died on me.

I've had (3) 40gb Maxtors, and (2) 80gb Maxtors, never any problems with any of them. I'm using all of them currently, and I've had one of them for about 2 years.

I also have (1) 60gb Seagate and have never had any problems with that drive either.

Never used Western Digital. From what other people have said, go with whatever is in your budget. They all seem to be good drives.
