which HDD brand to go for?

I was looking at getting one of the following HDD.

80Gb Western Digital 7200rpm ATA\100 (8Mb Cache)
80Gb Seagate Barracuda V 7200rpm ATA\100 (8Mb Cache)
80Gb Maxtor 7200rpm ATA\133 (8Mb Cache)

There is a similar price range with the WD being slightly cheaper. What do people recommend, is one better than the others? Does one run cooler than the others? Does the ATA 133 offer any real advantage over the ATA 100?

thanks

From what I've read, there is not much difference between the ata100 and ata133. WD seems to be a popular choice among the various forums, but it might be becuase of all the great deals they've been running on them lately.

In the long run you will get many various opinions on this question. Personally, I go with whatever is cheapest. I currently have 3 Maxtors in my main rig and 4 WD in my server rig. Never had a problem with either brand. I never had a problem (until I FUBARd it) my old school SCSI Seagate either. Any of them will be fine.

Never had problems with Western Digital or Seagate. Can't say the same about Maxtor.

I've had a lot of maxtor drives and while they were okay they never seemed as snappy as the WD ones.
I just bought this drive today and was talking about it in another thread:
80Gb Western Digital 7200rpm ATA\100 (8Mb Cache)
it's great and incredibly fast. VERY nice drive. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. WD seems the way to go as i can get it cheap along with a 3yw. Is the noice of 1 WD drive compared to 1 seagate drive, that noticeable different.

thanks

I've never had a problem with Maxtor (three bad IBM's though).
I have a friend who used to repair PCs and saw a lot of WDs come in.
It's like cars, there are a lot of quality brands. When you find one you like and doesn't give you trouble, STICK WITH IT!

seems people have a real beef with one manufacturer or another. i've had multiple drive failures but only one that was outside the warranty period. true, there are some real horor stories of multiple bad drives in a row, but that is just a freak. your best bet is to go with a manufacturer that offers a 3 year warranty. if the drive fails then get it replaced. if it fails outside the 3 years then who cares by then? and if you don't back up your data then don't cry when you loose it all. complex mechanical parts fail, so be prepared for it!

I have both in my system. 1 is a 60gb 2mb cache seagate and the other an 80gb WD special ed. When I first installed the WD, I noticed it has a high-pitched whine to it, while the seagate can't be heard unless my room is dead quiet. Like when the freezer compressor turns off. If you have fans that blow faster than that of a Dell, you probably won't hear either drive.

I think it is splitting hairs among those HDD's. However, if I had to choose, I would get the WD, because I recently built a system using the "special edition" w/8mb cache; it was real fast and very quiet. I would not hesitate to buy another one. I've read that the WD is noisy, but it was not my experience. I have a Barracuda IV and had an IBM GXP, both very quiet; noise wise, the WD seemed to me, to be just as quiet.

My IBM Deskstar 60GXP (40GB) is also now 2 years old and it's been the best drive I've ever had.

Still going perfectly.

all i've bought in the last year or so is maxtor's, my 60gb maxtor is still chugging, can't even hear it, tho if i was gettin a new hard drive now, i'd go w/ the WD special editions, 8mb cache mmmm.

I'll vote WD.

And here's the summary (not including people who said more then one brand):

WD - 7 (70%)
Sea - 0 (0%)
Max - 1 (10%)
IBM - 2 (20%)
---------------
10 (100%)

I would recommend either except the Maxtor...

I have a WD 800JB at home.. awesome drive.. I don't have any Seagates currently, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one...

Maxtor has a good performance, but 2 died on me.
Seagate has been good so far, but a little bit slower than the Maxtor.
And I'm waiting for my WD to get here next week.
