Which HD is better? WD WD1001FALS or Samsung HD103SJ

Hey everyone. I'm looking at a 1TB (non-SSD) HD as my primary HD for my new build. So far, I've narrowed it down to 2 HDs that seem to be gathering good reviews. I wanted to know, which one, in your opinions, is better? (if there is one) Better in terms of this usage: performance, reliability, etc. for being a single primary HD.

WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB (or)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB

Thanks.

For reliability just flip a coin and buy, anything will do.

In case of performance there are better options.

A 640 GB single platter drive gives better performance, while being cheap, than a 1 TB drive.

EDIT: I see you have a 640 GB drive already but i guess that is a caviar blue. A 640 GB caviar black is what I am referring to.

The 640GB black drive has two 320GB platters. The largest platter size for any WD drives are 500GB.

WD did just put out a two platter 1TB black drive, but there is a price premium that really doesn't match the small performance boost.

The WD black drives have a 5 year warranty, but all things considered I think flip a coin and buy is the best advice.

I am sorry my bad.

I always see 640 GB caviar black out performing other 1 TB drives, so I assumed it to be a single platter drive.

yasasvy, the Caviar SE16 is not Caviar Black, it's an enterprise HDD.

And to OP: I own two WD1001FALS drives, they've been in my computer for more than a year, and have had no problems with them at all. The Caviar Black 1TB is one of the fastest drives available (slower only to the Caviar Black 2TB; Raptors and SSDs aside), you won't go wrong with it. Personally I wouldn't go for the Samsung. Maybe it's just me, but Samsung's not really reputable in the desktop HDD world.

Your charts do not show the bench tests for the HDD that the OP listed; yours shows the F1, not the F3.

The F3 has an average read speed of 115 MB/s, clearly outclassing the WD Black 1TB which in a fair test actually scores 80 MB/s.

Thanks.

I've got them both. WD Black is very loud so it is relegated to backup duty with acoustic management turned on...which obviously obviates any performance lead the drive may have over other drives.

So far very happy with my F3.

This is why benchmarking fails. It may be fast in benches, but IRL, it's kinda pokey. Not real pokey, but it's no F3 or Black.

I'd go for the F3s simply because if you decide to do a RAID array in the future, the WDs will give you trouble.
