Which has better performance?

My friend and I are having an argument about which computer has better performance. His specs are

Computer #!:
Intel P4 2.8Ghz HyperThreading
Soyo P4VTE
512MB PC3200
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Windows 32-Bit

Computer #2
AMD 64 3200+
DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250Gb
512MB PC3200
ATI Radeon 9600XT

Windows 64-Bit (Beta)

Which computer would have better overall general performance?

I am posting this again so everybody can get a fresh look

Thanks,
JRiche

Fairly close with a slight edge to the A64.
For gaming, the P4 would crush the A64 though.

Between those two systems, the P4 would be a nobrainer overall.

I think computer 1 will have a little bit over #2. The 9800 pro is gonna be better for games and the P4 is gonna slightly outdue the A64 in things like video editing. #2 would be a better gaming computer if the two computers had the same video card.

Define "overall general performance"?

The system with the 9800Pro and 32-bit Windows (XP?) would be much faster for gaming, because the 9800Pro is easily 50-100% faster than the 9600XT. The system with the faster AMD processor might be better at other things; it's hard to say without getting into more details about what you want to use the systems for (and then you have to get into the whole 64-bit/32-bit debate again, which I don't really want to do). Certainly both would be way overkill for basic office work (email, net surfing, running MS Office, that sort of thing).

Sounds like a pissing contest!!!

They both have their strengths...your weaker gaming card offsetted by your faster speed. HT is null in gaming but wil really help him in certain encoding/rendering apps. He has Via crap, you have Nforce....

Who knows...run some test!!!

Render...

cinebench (single cpu) he can do multiple cpu
Povray3.5 (not multithreaded)

Calculations...

Sciencemark
Superpi

Games...

Aquamark
UT2k3
Doom3

Encoding...

encode same clip with TMPGenc (trial version)
dvdshrink same movie but only after you rip it to HDD that way you can take the dvd-rom out of the equation...

Actually you using 64bit Winsuck makes your system weaker, IMO...That is too damn buggy and some things just wont work yet....

That's not a good comparison. The vid cards are different.

Put the same vid card in both machines, and WinXP 32 bit on both...

With all other things being as equal as possible (except the CPU),an A64 3200+ will crush a P4 2.8 in everything.

The p4 will have in edge in gaming due to a much better GFX card. The A64 will run circles around the p4 in almost everything else though.
