Which hardware marked you most?

During our computer usage timelife, at some stage we aimed, wanted, got impressed, dreamed for a piece or hardware! Which one and why it marked you so much? Name only one, a CPU a Graphics Card, a motherboard, a screen, whatever.

Mine 3dfx Voodoo2

Reason
We were back in 1998, I remember watching a gamers tv program where they said to explore the full potential of unreal, you needed that 3dfx card.
After that, it was just not only about picking a computer (486 or pentium) it was about having a graphics card also!

It somesort represented the start of the modern gaming era as we know today.

PS - in 1998 that card cost in Europe €300, you could buy a computer at that stage for no less than €1000; that card already had the equivalent of what we call in ourdays SLI\Crossfire systems

Mine is nearly the same as the OP, but with the Voodoo 3. There was really something special about the 3Dfx GPU's.

Well... for me it wasn't exactly one piece. It was the all-in-wonder 9600 pro that made me want to build my first computer because for $150 I paid for it, it promised ability to game, watch/record tv and came with a hl2 voucher. got 25% overclock and watched/recorded plenty of content i wouldn't normally be able to find in libraries until i got the dreaded code 10 error that never goes away even with reformat. rma'd for a aiw 9600xt and that worked until the same error. it now resides in my friend's dell and surprisingly he doesn't get any errors.

I agree with you :D there was something special in those GPUs, we knew that at less they would use all massive force available for them!!!

I'm going to list two (deal with it).

By far, my #1 would be high speed internet (dsl or cable). We went from text-based BBS (LORD!!) and mud games, to youtube and WoW.

The other one has to be SSDs. The technology is in its infancy buts its still orders of magnitude faster than its predecessor - and its addressing the slowest part (and the only moving part) of a computer. When you consider how fast your CPU-->Cache-->Memory run, compared to your hard drive, it boggles the mind that its taken so long.

(iphone deserve an honorable mention from bringing the real internet to the mobile space)

Athlon XP 1700+. Imagine yourself stuck with a flaky K6-2 500MHz for 3 years then switched to that..

ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro. I loved that thing. Lasted me forever, too.

IO Magic MagicRush 3d (voodoo banshee)

At that time I had never seen 3d hardware-accelerated graphics. My jaw hit the floor.
