Which hard drive?

I need a nice big hard drive for general data storage. I currently have an 18GB, 15K RPM Cheetah for OS / applications. But I'm about to buy an AIW 9700, so I need big drive to store recorded video. Plus it's be nice to move archived junk like school projects off from my main drive.

So, what do you guys recommend for a hard drive that's big, reliable, and has the best bang-for-the-buck (as long as it's fast enough to keep up recording high-quality video, it's golden)? Priorities in that order.

Edit: Oh yeah, a quiet HD would be nice, too. I've been tweaking my system to the loudest thing is the Cheetah. But I'd say low-noise was of the same priority as value.

i'd recommend 2 WD 800 JB's on raid 0
 
I totally agree with "bgeh". Just get the "JB" versions(i.e Special Edition) according to your need. Plus they come with a 3 year warranty.
 
Why's everyone so in to RAID now? For something like recording TV, is the normal speed of a JB drive really not enough? And why deal with the reliablity issue of having one drive fail result in losing the data on both?
 
Yea seriously I am getting tired of RAID, I used to have RAID arrays but it wasn't worth it your latancy is sky high and RAID 0 is pretty much only good for very large files. However, drive performance is going up and up. I know this guy is talking video files which is one of RAIDs highlights but I honestly think that a single drive would do just fine. A WD200BB, or WD120BB would do just fine. Also depends on what kind of video your talking about and resolution etc, I would be tempted to get a couple Maxtor 160gb 5400rpm drives because if your dealing with at or around TV quality video (with at least some decent compression method) your not going to strain your hard drives all that much.
 
well raid is just nice because you will want all the storage space you can get... and instead of getting a 200 gig western digital drive that will be crazily high priced, you can get 2 100 gig JB versions, raid them together to act like a 200 gig, and still essentially have it be cheaper.
