Which hard drive to get

CompUSA has a couple of good hard drive deals this week. They have a 120GB 8MB cache Seagate fpr 59.99 after 20IR and 50MIR. They also have 250GB 8MB cache Maxtor for 129.99 after 70.00IR. Now i would prefer to not have to deal with the rebate(espcially if its a compusa rebate)on the seagate. But I know the seagates are supposed to be soem of the quietest drives around(good for a HTPC). But the maxtor offers more then double the GB for not too much more, 50 cents a GB on the seagates and 52 cents ont he maxtors. Now if the seagates had the IR and the maxtors had the MIR, then it would be a no brainer, I would get 2 of the seagates. What do you think. How much noiser are the maxtors compared to the seagates?

Edit: the segate MIR appears to be a manufacturers rebate, so that helps a bit.

If you meant the MaXLine Plus II, then I would sacrifice 4 dB/A's for 250GB's anyday. Not to mention it is a top performer.

The Maxtor drive is also going to be very quiet. If you need absolute silence, then I would go with the Seagate drive. However, you should probably save yourself some hassle and buy the Maxtor which you won't be able to notice the difference with anyway.

Another alternative which you may want to consider is purchasing two Seagate drives and putting them in a RAID 0 array for the best performance possible.

Yeah, but this is going in an HTPC/PVR. Its main use will be for PVR. Non raid should record and play back the video just fine, right? SO I would think space would be mor eimportant then speed. I was just worried about the noise, but you both say they are close to the same, plus the case I am using is an Antec withthe rubber grommets and the drives are mounted closer to the back of the case, not towards the front like normal, and it will be in an entertainment center. Not really closed off, but it may shield some of the noise. Then again it may make it echo and resonate.
