I think it is crucial to have 3 years warranty.........last time I heard IBM and WD were giving one year warranties with their HDs.......what brands offer 3 years warranty now?

Thanks

I think a CompUSA branded Maxtor still has 3 years (the one I bought a month ago did).

Seagate doe still have a 3 year warrenty, I'm waiting for one of theirs that melted on me.
Most 8meg cache drives also carry the 3 year warrenty.
If I were a Hard drive manufacturer I would give a 5 year warrenty to take the lead.

the WD 40 gig retail drive I recently purchased had a flyer in the box- 3 year warranty for $19... I believe their premium 8meg cache drives still carry a three year warranty...

Other makers may offer extended warranties for a fee, dunno....

The new policy at Seagate is one year, for drives shipped after oct 2002....

Higher end IDE Maxtor and WD have 3 year
Pretty sure all IDE Seagates have 3 year

All SCSI Seagates have 5 year
Pretty Sure Fujitsu SCSI drives have 5 year still

Not certain on the rest of the bunch ...

Samsung, WD "JB" (8MB) drives, and SOME retail Seagate units. Maxtor's upcoming "MaxLine" series will have a 3yr warranty as well.

Jesu, guys, this took about 5 minutes- and I'm not that good...

Seagate
Maxtor
WD

Looks like WD is the only one to offer a three year extended warranty arrangement on standard desktop drives...

Here's the IBM/Hitachi info-

More

Looks like more of the same- I'll let somebody else do Samsung and Fujitsu, I doubt they're any different...

Course reading the fine print always helps too :)

from Maxtor's site:

Effective October 1, 2002, Maxtor branded retail ATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 1 year, unless otherwise indicated by Maxtor on the retail packaging.

All 4 of the Maxtor DM 9+ Ultra 8MB Cache drives I've bought in the last 2 months or so have 3 year warranties; confirmed on the box, manual, and most importantly via serial number on the Maxtor website.

The 8meg cache Maxtors aren't their standard desktop drives- they have to compete with the 8meg WD's on price and warranty..... both are premium drives, premium prices, premium warranties...

Errr. No. The 8MB Ultras are simply an extension of the DiamondMax Plus 9 line; their retail standard desktop drives. These products often carry the same MSRP in retail stores and are sold and marketed interchangeably (particularly non-tech stores like Staples). There were also instances where the 8MB drives were shipped in the standard packaging.

The Maxtor MaxLine drives are probably what you are thinking about.

The Maxtor Desktop Line is clearly indicated as such by the tap at the top, with the current flagship being the DiamondMax Plus 9. Clicking on the product reveals that:

DiamondMax Plus 9 offers performance leadership design with a 2MB or 8MB buffer, ATA/133 or SATA interface.

The Ultra series is Maxtor's highend retail consumer line intended to compete with WD's JB line. The Maxline II Series is not a retail boxed product and is aimed at the corporate market as a cheaper alternative to SCSI with huge capacities.

BOO on maxtors part for only providing a 1 year warranty with the regular ide drives. I am a VERY big maxtor fan (or was untill the wd special editions came out). Maxtor is a reputable company, why did they change their warranty??

They pretty much had to because all of the majors went to 1yr on their basic IDE drives. The fact that it happened in October 2002 for all of them should pave the way for a federal or class-action case for collusion. They just aren't making enough on the basic drives to cover them for 3 years anymore. They should all follow suit with WD and offer an extended warranty. The only thing is that you can often get the equivalent high-line model for less difference than the cost of the warr.
. It does not necessarily follow that the quality won't remain at least as high as it was when 3 yrs was standard. They still have to compete for your dollars in the basic category and, with the internet, they don't have anywhere to hide if they start putting out turkeys. I'm sure all the chatter about the 75-series substantially hurt IBM's drive sales and led to them selling their drive business to Hitachi.
