In my case, they don't. Click of death claimed a 60GXP. Then a head crash killed a 120GXP with horrible scraping noises as the head slowly disintegrated the drive surface. Its replacement, a 180GXP, died of the click of death 44 days after I received it. Note, not a single 75GXP in there.
I had also used 4 Hitachi drives in my RAID 5 array. SMART readout showed that two of them were developing bad sectors. That was when I'd had enough of IBM/Hitachi hard drives. I sold them all and never looked back. (And yes, I did make sure that potential buyers were fully aware of the bad sector situation.)
I have Seagate 7200.8 drives now - to be precise, 7 of them in my system.
