Question Which GPU?

Oof. You don't even need to do the hypothetical scenario. These are practically your choices for GPUs now. I would probably go with the GTX650. Mainly because it has NVENC. The GT1030 might be a little faster for gaming, but I would sacrifice that for hardware accelerated decoding.

GTX650 is Kepler, GT1030 is Pascal. You're telling me that Kepler had better decoding than Pascal?

Edit: OP didn't mention GTX 1650.

It helps with plex and handbrake. But if your not really using those programs, then yea, NVenc isn't probably important.
Not only that its a gimped version of NVenc with limited transcodes, and not the unlimited one the Quadro P2000 enjoys.
 
2 gb of ram* > all other features

*It should be pointed out there is also a SDD4 version of the 1030 that should be avoided.
*yea, the gtx has more bandwidth, but with only 1 GB standard that seems unlikely to matter. The HD5770 has the same problem.

oh gowd i can't believe we came down to a point where the best recomendation is a 1030 because the next viable choice is a 730, and the only possible upgrade starts at 4x what those 2 cards cost.
 
Anyone else surprised at the HD5770 votes? I bought an ASUS model for a little under 30 bucks. Haven't tried it yet but was recommended to me before on here. Supposedly a well made card, albeit an old one...

- Yeah, caps out at DX11 support, 1GB ram, fairly power hungry, won't even boot games that have Vulkan or DX12 renderers.

No encoding support for those that care.

No driver or comparability updates.

Just don't see a good reason to go for such an old card that has been superceeded by better arch's from both NV and AMD...

Yup. If it had been 7770 or better yet 7790 I would have been way more tempted.

GCN still has real driver support. Everything prior to that is using the older stuff and ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ really old.
 
I'd have to pick the 1030, it's the only one in that bunch that's still getting driver updates.

Honestly, I'm amazed that we haven't got to the point where people are robbing factories and stealing video cards to scalp them. They're as good as gold right now!

That's basically me, right now.

Any new computer I'm building will have be paired with GPUs I have as spare parts: a RX550, a GT1030 or a HD7770.

I am a broken record, but for PCs where you are getting work done a Maxwell Quadro is a great option. Built like little tanks, configured for low power usage with big frame buffers (historically speaking). Plus you get Grid (not sure if that is Quadro specific) which is more flexible than Windows Snap. Usually decently priced on the Bay as well.
