Which governor will become President in 2008?

This is a serious question, and I'm looking for serious opinions. As most of you should know by now, senators do not usually win the presidency. In fact, a senator has not won the presidency since JFK. Typically, it is the VP or a governor who has the best chances. As we can say with certainty now that Cheney doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell (as if he ever did), I'm genuinely curious who will go to the front in 2008 now that the Dems have positioned themselves with the majority of the governorships.
Please no Hillary responses thank you.

Still too early to tell. A lot of things can change in two years... who knows how many Democratic governors have you know... Aids?

Oh I don't mean aids... I mean "pages", or "assistants" 🙂

(if you don't get the South Park Subway Diet episode reference, that's YOUR fault!)

I don?t think anyone can stop Hillary now. Yesterday?s victory by Democrats will not push Democrats to look outside of Washington.

I do think this will result in Republicans looking to a governor or other outsider.

Yesterday was good for Romney and Newt, bad for McCain.

BTW: I do think we will see some Democrat governor step up and take on Hillary, but not sure who that is. Some southern or western governor would have the best chance in a national election.

EDIT: BIGS OOPS. Said don't instead of do... my bad

I would vote for him. He's a no-nonsense, cut the BS kinda guy from what I've seen. And a moderate too, not a flaming nut like half of the Dems out there 🙁

I don't think it will be in 2008, but I like McCaskill so far. A democrat beating an incumbent republican in Missouri is a pretty big accomplishment.

I don't think there are enough prominent democrats who could realistically pull > 50% of the country in 2008. Best chances lie in a senator, as most of the gubernatorial races were close. Starting in a few weeks, you'll definitely start seeing Dems making moves to gain them support à la McCain, et al.

Could the Democrat victory hurt Hillary?s chance of winning the Presidency?

Look at is this way: With Democrats in charge of both Houses she can not run against the Republican house.
And with Bush and Cheney gone she can not run against them.

Which means who ever runs for President will have to stand for something.
They will have to give people a reason to vote for them, instead of just running against failures of the past.

Now? Democrats have not won the Presidency in this situation since Kennedy in 1960.
Carter, won after Watergate, any Democrat could have won.
Clinton, ?it?s the economy stupid? all you have to say. He won by running against Bush 41.

Who ever gets the nomination in 2008 will have to stand up, offer solutions and ideas and then have to stand behind their beliefs. I still believe that the country leans to the right more than to the left. That means a left leaning candidate will have a much harder time winning in 2008 than a right leaning candidate.

I think Hillary will stick around the senate and end up as Majority/Minority leader. Some inside sources were indicating this last night, and that's the way she intends to go.

Bayh is a very good dark horse candidate. Not many people know who he is, what his stances are, but those that do (pundits) give him a very good chance. It helps that he's a very popular democratic senator from what is considered a fairly conservative state.

I agree with you on Bayh. I was originally hoping for a Warner/Bayh ticket, but now that Warner is gone, Bayh would be a good choice. He has a lot of support in a red state, and has the experience as a governor and a senator.

I really thought Tim Pawlenty here in MN could make a good republican candidate. And honestly considering this states politics and current situation on the national level to win again might be a good indication of his appeal.

I don't think any of the new Dem governors will be presidential candidates. They may help the eventual candidate win more votes in their state though.

I think Bill Richardson will likely run.

But Carter, Reagan, Clintom & GWB all seemed to come out of nowhere (at least to me). I wouldn't have given any of them a chance: Shows what I know.

Also, hard to tell at this early time what the "hot button" issue will be. Ex. The economy? Immigration reform? etc. That will to some extent favor one candidate over the others.

I dunno, I've spent time with Gov Pawlenty (my boss is a close friend of his), and I don't see him as Presidential material. He seems like a bit of a lightweight to me (though in all fairness he's clearly much brighter than President Bush and several other US Presidents). If he'd lost yesterday (which he came damned close to doing), his political career would have been over IMO. I will say that the idea of a midwestern swing-state governor could be an appealing prospect as a Presidential candidate, but frankly I think a lot of Democratic Presidential candidates would beat Pawlenty in his own state.

My early picks... Governors for prez

Rs
George Pataki
Mitt Romney
Mike Huckabee

Ds
Bill Richardson
Ed Rendell
Mike Easley (My dark horse) Governor of NC.

I have a hard time seeing a senator winning this thing.

McCain... Don't think he has much of a shot
Clinton... Seems like a lock for the Dem nom right now but she has a TON of baggage and couldn't be any more polarizing
Allen... Says he won't run... we'll see
Bob Kerry... Has great stage presence, seem very bright.
John Kerry... Bwaaahahahahahahaha
Obama... Hmm... He hasn't said no yet. I don't think he'd win but it would be a good warm up for 2012

Any outsiders?
Howard Dean? I guess we'll see if he likes being the DNC Chair. Probably won't run
Rudy Guiliani... I think he'd be an interesting Independent candidate. No way he gets the R nom though
Newt - popular with the base... doesn't have a chance in hell

Gore is going to be a big challenger for the Dem nomination.
