The asus or gainward should also be very good.

Crazy cooler ??? the coolers pathetic under that box casing is a small heatsink .. its like a 3rd the size of the other heat sinks on the other brand geforce FX 5900

so far the FX 5900 card with the biggest heat sink has been the

Albatron Cooling is massive and its got 3 fans

Wow that Albatron cooler looks wicked! Too bad it's handicapped by the worst name in video card history since the GeForce was originally going to be called "GayForce" ... "WiseFan" sound very good indeed, grasshopper! Very fast!

I'm a tad disappointed by Leadtek's cooler myself. Unlike their past (amazing) designs, this one is mostly for show: 90% of the cooler doesn't make direct contact with the card, just smaller heatsinks. Albatron and ASUS sound like safe bets to me. You really can't go wrong with Leadtek though. Ever.

Appreciate all the replies. So far it looks like this:

1. Albatron
2. Gainward
3, Asus

Some people already pointed out that I did not ask which chipset to get under $400, I said which 5900 to get under $400. It's clearly in the thread title.

Heh, first thing I thought of when I saw this thread is "Radeon 9800 Pro"...said as a joke, which is exactly what, IMO, was said as the first reply! It made me laugh, maybe some of you need to lighten up! :)

And before you say anything, I have a 4200, and am in serious need of an upgrade, but no money to do so! ;)

That's what it was meant as, a joke, but apparently some insecure 5900 owners can't take it. :)

NVIDIA SUX!!!"

Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The original poster asks which "5900" to get. And said troll responds with 9800 Pro. If that isnt trolling then what is??????

I thought it was funny...

The MSI card can be had for $404 from newegg.

4200 of any flavor is still a very potent card. You are surely not in dire need of a new card yet? Are you?
Or do you play with all the goodies cranked up. Then I can see a reason for the upgrade.

I got that eVGa 5900 for 249 bucks. I played with it before my monitor gave out and it was fast and had great IQ compared to my GF4 Ti4600.

For the money this thing is a steal.

If you're really his friend then you'll get him the cheaper and faster Radeon 9800 Pro.

Early DirectX 9 benchmarks are showing utterly absymal performance on FX cards and the 9700 Pro/9800Pro cards are usually doubling their performance. Your friend will likely find he has a lemon when he starts trying to play the new DirectX 9 titles as they start arriving.

I suggested Leadtek's but he wants Asus brand. What would you guys recommend?

His budget is $400 (firm)

If it`s Nvidia only then I would go Leadtek as well, second choice would be Gainward IMHO.

I'd have to agree with Genx87. For $250, that is an excellent deal. The only thing is I haven't seen many reviews on this specific (i.e. non ultra) card and I'm curious how it overclocks. Genx87, have you done any overclocking with this card?
