Hey I am looking into upgrading my Geforce 2 MX/MX 400 to a GeForce 4. But appatently there are many versions with the number "4" in them.. I was just thinking like GeForce 4 MX/MX 400 or what ever is very good but also easy on the wallet.

I just want one that will be quick and smooth when I play games like Call of Duty, Wolfenstein, Far Cry..etc...

I am running Win XP on an nforce2 mobo with an Athlon 64 3000+ CPU and 512 DDR 3200 ram.. blah blah.. my system is fast and I want a fast video card to go with it, just for pleasingly smooth gaming.

So I need some smart ppl with experience to tell me wich card to get.

Go for just about any GeForce4 Ti card. From slowest to fastest:

128MB Ti4200
64MB Ti4200
128MB Ti4200 8x
Ti4400\Ti4800SE
Ti4600\Ti4800

EDIT: If you want something faster and have $180-200 to spend try an AGP GeForce 6600GT or a Radeon 9800 Pro.

why a geforce 4? go for at least a 5, if not 6. you've got a good rig, you need a good video card.

Well if I were you I'd get a Used Radeon 9500 Pro for like $70-80 if you play DX9 Games.

There isn't a huge difference between the GF4'sl, :p

LOL. For $40 - 60 you're getting a used gf4 ti4200. Stay away from the 4mx cards they're almost as slow as what you have now.

You are seeking something potentially impossible. MX level cards, generally, aren't able to offer much when a modern game is involved.

"Fast" video cards cost a lot more than $70, even used, even with almost no one else bidding against you from eBay. GF 4 Series video cards were excellent adapters for gaming from 2 1/2 to 3 years ago right up to a year ago or so, when DirectX9 games started appearing. Because they are still good for games older than that, they command fairly high prices when used, but still in good shape.

The nVidia GF 5 series were overpriced, overheated, under powered, and the better ATI chip set 9xxx cards were a better choice dollar for dollar at that point. You can still find new GF 5 cards, with the prices much more of a match to performance now. A mid-level "semi-fast" ATI card from a year ago, like a Radeon 9600, was and may still be a better deal than the FX 5700 Ultras, however. The GF 4's are going to give away a lot to newer cards because they can't go beyond the DirectX 8.1 level.

Right now, the nVidia Series 6 chip set seems to be the performance and value leader for gamers, with the 6600 showing the way, and the 6800 sitting atop the heap. But you'll *PAY* to get that performance level. You just won't find anything semi-fast for much less than $100, used, and $140-150, discounted/on sale, clearance-priced, refurbished, whatever, if it's new.

P.S. Last time I looked, the NF2 MB's were all Socket A boards, not 754 or 939. You sure you don't have an NF3 of some sort?

If you want to impress anyone, then get a 6600gt or 9800pro.

I wouldn't waste my time on anything else..

A Ti4200, as the others have said, is probably your best bet for $40, but your system is still really unbalanced. I would save up a lot more money and try for at least a used 9500 Pro or 9700 Pro (the viability of even these cards for the long term is questionable).

I must have an nforce 3 then.. yeah.. i keep getting that mixed up with the "2" in my video card. LOL

Well it looks like you all have given me so many different suggestions.. i still dont know what would be best for me.

Again, im not that much of a gamer.. I just want the stuff that I do play to be as smooth as possible for my price range. My GeForce 2 is actually pretty dang perfect (IMO) and really gives me almost no trouble, especially now that I have upgraded to Athlon 64. It hardly gets choppy at all even when I have the textures and fx up highest they can go on the games I play. (I overclock my gf card a little also...)

So I just figured that its been a while, so I might as well get a new sexy video card with a little more beef and teeth.

I suppose I will go with Ti4200 as ts3433 said.
