Which game did you like better: Half Life 2 or Far Cry ?

I finished Far Cry a few months ago, and currently in the middle of playing HL2 (sand traps), and so far I think these two games are both great and have a lot of similarity in their graphics, sound and game play. The games look and sound similar in many ways, but for me the big difference that I noticed so far, is that HL2 is a lot more linear than far cry, so I'm leaning towards far cry because I really liked the tactical elements of the game play, not to mention that it feels more realistic.

So I'd like to hear what you people think.

I'm in the middle of playing FarCry (have five or so levels to go; haven't gotten around to playing it more lately), and am in the first level or so of HL2. I'm really not far enough to make a good judgment on HL2 yet of course, but from what I've seen so far, it seems pretty much equal to FC in my opinion; better in some ways from a gameplay perspective. But from what I've seen so far, HL2's graphics weren't nearly as amazing as I was expecting, which did surprise me. I'd say FC narrowly wins there.

So I'm going with "too close to call". 🙂

I finished HL2, got bored of Farcry, but FC did seem to last longer (maybe because I didn't play through it in huge chunks though).

Two words...

Gravity Gun

Doom3 was great, for about 2 hours, then it got boring as hell. Great graphics, redundant gameplay.
Far Cry had wonderful graphics, great gameplay, good AI. MP was decent to disappointing.
HL2 has fantastic graphics, awesome gameplay, and the atmosphere was even better than that of FC and D3.

Tie, because I got board of FarCry when I stopped shooting humans and started to shoot those dumb animal things. HL2 is getting boreing too with those weird things that go on your head.

If you are at Ravewnholm, then don't worry, it gets more human and less face-huggery when you exit Ravenholm.
If not, then WTF are you on about? Ravenholm is the olny main place with face huggers.

Later in Far Cry, after the first encounters with mutants, you go back to fighting human mercenaries, and also combinations of mercenaries and mutants (they fight each other). This is another correlation to HL2 with its mix of humans and aliens. HL2 has more types of enemies, but Far Cry has a lot better AI and tactical battles that you need to plan in advance to succeed. HL2 is more like playing through a scriped movie, I mean I don't even think you can really backtrack, there is pretty much a single path to follow. I feel fthat far cry is a lot more open ended, you can go anywhere you want and accomplish the goals in many different ways (many times I used a different strategy for a particular segment than what's suggested in the walk thru, and sometimes it worked better).

Also, I think far cry has better sound effects for the weapons, and for enemies. Although it is very close.

It's quite clear that HL2 copied a lot of stuff from far cry, I mean how obvious can you get with the exploding barrels ? Also walking down highway 17 in HL2 overlooking the ocean is just a little too close to going up the island mountain roads in far cry. And the vehicles and their control system, is it just the so much alike by chance ? I give HL2 a 10 in ripping off ideas from other games.

Yeah, and the whole 'using a gun' thing was a blatant ripoff of other games. Also the physics were a blatant ripoff of real life 😉 .

LOL you seem really serious in your post, but I have to assume it was meant as tongue-in-cheek when you say that walking by water was a blatant ripoff of another game, or that exploding barrels were a ripoff specific to Far Cry, even though they were done first in the original Doom to the same effect.

I didn't say far cry invented all this, but the similarities are so great that it's quite obvious that Valve developers were spending many hours with far cry and trying to duplicate every feature of the game. I mean, there are many games which have some things in common, especially basic stuff like guns, but how often do you see so many similarities - riding a motor boat, fighting helicopters, exploding barrels and moveable crates, co-playing with other characters, driving road vehicles on mountain roads, even the textures used for the environments is similar. I almost expect to find a hang glider somewhere in HL2, just like in far cry. And Also probably a sniper rifle.

Bottom line is that I can't think of any other two games which are so similar.

i agree, though i have been playing farcry alot more then HL2 right now, so i can't say HL2 is better, i'm loving farcry though!

I liked Farcry and here's why.

Farcry was non linear meaning I can play again and it is not the same game.

HL2 is fun but relies on the gravity gun way too much. I would play sections and you need to use the gravity gun more often than not or run out of bullets, but the gravity gun is slow to shoot multiple times and when you have those facehuggers the gravity gun sucks, plus carrying anything around on the gravity gun impairs your vision, but if you don't you may not always have enough ammo for the gravity gun.

I have finished Farcry, well 99% and am only 4 hours into HL2 so I am reserving the right to change my opinion.

Also far cry is a very hard game to finish, especially because of the checkpoint system, which means that you'll die quite a few times before finally making the next checkpoint, where usually you'll be able to heal. But in HL2 you can save anytime, but even without using the saves I almost never die (I'm finished about 60% of the game and died only 3 times). I still think far cry's checkpoint system adds to the tension and strategy of the game.

Overall far cry seems a lot more realistic and thus challenging in its battles with the enemies. This doesn't mean HL2 is not a great game, which it truely is, with nonstop fast paced action, and great graphics and sound effects. It's just not as deep in its gameplay. Far cry is a slower more tactical game, but of course it does have its share of fast paced action.

HL2 has a lot better cut scenes which are interactive and briliantly used to advance the story. In farcry, the cut scenes are short and few, and the story mostly unfolds by radio communications with doyle. As for the story itself, I guess HL2 is better, especially considering the variety of environments which you go thru in the game, while far cry keeps using the same environments in the various levels (there is still good variation, although it's noting like HL2).

Farcry got 13 votes more than I expected it to. Strategic combat? Please. Go play ghost recon or something and have an actual challenge. FC had pretty water, no plot, ugly models, and gameplay more boring than doom3.

Not even possible. It would take more than a few months to copy those features. Also, there are plenty of HL2 screenshots released well over a year ago showing water effects in HL2.
