Which food group do mushrooms fall under?

Well they're not an animal or a vegetable (they're fungi) so that basically eliminates all normal food groups. So they're really out on their own...

They're considered a vegetable culinarily, I think, but they're not biologically classified as plants.

The same food group as leeches, bark and shoe leather. Things you would eat if you were starving to death and no other food was available.

that is what it is. And technically it isn't a vegetable since it isn't an edible seeds or roots or stems or leaves or bulbs or tubers or nonsweet fruits of any of a plant. And plants are GREEN (cauliflower has green leaves for you morons)
can we just say it's food?

Obviously you don't know how to properly prepare them!

There are plenty of plants that have no green on them.

But yeah, it's a fungus, so it should be in the miscellaneous food group along with beer and nachos.

I know how to prepare them just fine. Take one cup of mushrooms, throw in trash. Repeat until gone.

I agree 100%.

Do a google search for mushroom and "food group" and you'll get tons of places saying it is a vegetable. I've tried searching the USDA, but I keep getting large PDFs that won't download. Of course the official designation is a political designation (much like tomatoes are biologically a fruit but the government decided they are vegetables to get around tarriffs).

Edit: Page 5 of this 2 MB PDF. Mushroom is a vegetable in the USDA eyes.

I know of only one reason to eat mushrooms, and it ain't because they taste good.

You people are just crazy! Take some fresh sliced mushrooms and some sliced onions and saute them in butter and A1 sauce, then top your grilled 16oz ribeye with them, and wash it all down with a cold beer.. Holy sh1t, I'm hungry already! :D

Wow, the ignorance of people these days. Try some matsutake mushrooms and say that to the chef's face
