Which fits me better, x2 3800 or E6300?

I want to take advantage of dual core.
am not a gamer. Just some web surfing, internet bankiing.
Built in graphics preferred.
No overclocking (because I don't know how to and don't headache)
I have 512MB PC2700. Instead of buying another 512MB DDR, I will give this up and buy 2 512MB DDR2. What speed DDR2? Matching pair unimportant.
I will use it for a couple of years and replace it. No upgrade.
Thanks.

You have to match your memory because every motherboard out there uses dual channel. You're gonna want your memory to cooperate with eachother. As for the speed go with 667 since you're not overclocking because the value is good at the moment with all the DDR2-800 either being overpriced or not in stock.

For the CPU I'd say go with a C2D because it is faster than AMD and offers a better value for the money. That being said if you want to be budget minded you can get good deals on AMD CPUs/motherboards from some retailers. So it's a matter of what you want to spend. If it were me I'd go with Intel right now unless you have to go cheaper.

Why go dual core if all you're doing is Internet related stuff? A Celeron will fit the bill perfectly fine.

He said it in his very first sentence. "I want to take advantage of dual core."

2 weeks ago I built x2 3800 Socket 939 (because I didn't want to throw away 1 GB DDR). My child had a computer problem and I gave it to her. I liked the dual core because I was able to burn DVD and browse internet. Say I got spoiled by dual core.
Thanks.

PS: While I was posting this, a few more suggestions were made. Thank you for the recommendations.

And what part of Internet related stuff will take advantage of dual core???????????????? Yes, Zombo.com is a great site, but it hardly pushes a single core CPU let alone a dual core.

Web surfing and Internet banking would run perfectly on a Celeron or Sempron. Dual core won't make your internet transactions any faster, nor will web pages load any faster. ;)

Dual core is mainly for multitasking and video encoding.

Er...there's more than just video editing apps that use 2 cores at a time. Please make sure you think before you type. There is no reason NOT to get a dual core system at this point. As far as I'm concerned single core is dead and you should look to the future. Most people will keep their system for a while and that means they don't want to be left behind when dual core is used everywhere.

Since gaming and overclocking is out of the picture I'd go with cheapest in price. More than likely thats going to be the X2. Although for not much more you can get a E6300. Depends on how price picky you want to be. Both will more than satisfy your needs as far as performance goes.

OK, so you think web surfing and online banking will utilise dual core in the near future?!

Get a clue.

There IS a reason NOT to go dual core at this time - price. You can get a Sempron or Celeron for $50, the X2 3800+ is $150, 3x the price.

And for surfing and online banking, the X2 will provide ZERO benefits, because these are CPU intensive tasks.

No you get a damn clue...do you really think that's ALL he does? He just offered an example of what he uses the computer for. He wouldn't even think of buying an E6300 if that's all he did and he'd use a 6year old Celeron.

FFS, unless he states otherwise, how can I assume what else he does with his PC?

Going by his original post, it seems his main use for the PC is Internet related tasks

Which hardly warrants a dual core CPU.

I am kinda in the same boat - 2 GB of Dual Channel Crucial ValueRam and Radeon 9800 I need to reuse. Leaning towards the E6300 and ASROCK VSTA.....Don't feel like dropping $500 in a system right now...Seems to me, for the same price as 939 Board and X2 3800, the E6300 might be a better choice...

Yeah, he thinks just because he has an E6400, everyone needs one, even if it's for freaking web surfing and online banking.

Hey, I might as well get a Kentsfield for my folks, they're into web browsing!!!

You know, 4 cores, the web pages must load 4 times faster, right? RIGHT?!

I'd have to go with harpoon84 and eelw on this - the dual core will provide few benefits if you do not multitask or use a multithreaded application. Even having several normal apps open at once, like some browser windows, word, and photoshop, will not really push a single core. Most of the improvements you noticed in the AMD you built will be due to the memory and storage systems, not the dual processors.

If you must go dual core, go the cheap one, as you will not notice a difference between it and the expensive models in the tasks you describe.

I don't know. It annoys me also (as I type this on a dual-core processor :D), but, you guys must have missed when the OP said:

Yes, burning a DVD is a very CPU intensive app  Buffer underrun will take care of that.

That being said, it's not as if I'm not a dual core user myself with my E6400 and a Northwood 3.4. But based on the OPs usage, dual core is a complete waste. As noted, he might as well get a quad core whiles he is at it. Imagine the amazing performance he will get surfing ATOT with it!!!!!

Hey, I never said that I thought he needed a dual-core, but since he's said he wants one twice, it sounds to me like he's going to buy one. He's just looking for advice on which one to buy...

This is the route I took. I got the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA and an E6400 and it was the best $300 upgrade I ever made.

And to the original poster, I encode & burn DVD's and surf the net with any number of windows and programs open no sweat with no "coasters". Dual cores do spoil you. :D And the E6300 is so very much faster than the X2-3800 it's sort of ridiculous but the X2 system could be done a little cheaper. I'd say E6300 but I am blissfully biased.

what about a pentium D805? its dual core and its cheap, all the dual core he needs.
