Will any 4 to 6 pin work? I see some generic on Newegg for a few bucks and I see some for $10+

Does brand matter?

Look at the Firewire port on your computer and your camcorder.

The camcorder is likely 4-pin, but the computer might be either 4-pin or 6-pin.

After a little research I noticed that you can also use a USB cable, probably 2.0. If you have one of those already why not try that before you invest in the firewire? It's worth a try (if you have the USB cable).

I don't think it is USB2.0. You are better off with FW/1394.

As mentioned just make sure as to whether you need 4 to 6 pin or another size combo. My Sony has a 4 in but my desktop is 6 pin while the lappy is 4 pin so I had to get 2 different cables.

I believe the USB 2 is just for still pictures. Video still would need Firewire.

Oh, you are sooooo...... NEW! From an Intel marketing (oh, godly intel creator of usb and all great processors.....) standpoint usb is faster, but the reality is firewire beats USB in transfer tests: every time.

Just make sure it is a sheilded cable. They have a higher reliabliy and acuracy for transfering data.

Yup, USB has too much overhead.
