i'm buying my sis a new lappy for her to start pharmacy school and i have essentially the same quotes from staples, best buy and circuit city....
for those of you who are interested, its a compaq 2800T
p4 1.4
256ddr (2dimms)
20gb hdd
16x cdrw
15" tft
32mb ati radeon 7500
floppy
2 batteries

getting it for ~1584
anyways, i'll be buying the 3 year warranty from whichever place, and just wondering which one has the best warranty? i know bb is good, but does anyone know about staples and cc? thanks for your help!

Best Buy. Covers battery like mentioned above and its $219.99. I dont know how much the plans are from other retailers but I also know that when someone walks into our store who is covered, we do everything we can to help them out. Where are you from?

Also make sure to buy the laptop with a premium credit (VISA/MasterCard/Amex) so you get an extra year of warranty for free. http://www.usa.visa.com/personal/cards/card_benefits.html

Its a laptop therefore it is only carryin coverage. And FYI, the difference between carryin and onsite on a desktop is always $50 and always well worth it....TRUST ME.

Farbio, I don't know which company offers the best extended-warranty service, but have you tried configuring a notebook at Dell w/ the 3 year on-site warranty and the specs you listed? Might be worth looking in to 🙂

A Dell Inspiron 2650 with the following specs:

P4-M 1.4GHz
256MB DDR
20GB HDD
8x CD-RW
15" XGA TFT
16MB DDR Geforce2Go
Spare Battery
3 year at-home service

$2108.00

Ugh, $300 more for less hardware

Thanks for the info. Why is the extra $50 on site worth it vs saving $50 for carry in? Just curious.

thanks for the help everyone!

and it looks like i'm going for bestbuy.
now, anyone want to explain why i should pay for the onsite if it will be used pretty exclusively in gainesville and orlando, which both have best buys?

thanks!

That's what I would like to know. The only answer I can think of is with onsite a technician visits your home/work and probably knows what they're doing. Versus the carry in warranty where the Best Buy techs will probably make sure that everything is plugged in, that it turns on then they just do a total reformat / reinstall everything (or so I heard).

The onsite service plan takes much less time in repair turn around. The technician will check out your computer, determine the problem, order parts, and install them all at your home. With the carry-in service plan, your computer is shipped out to one of best buy's service warehouses. The average turn around time for a carry-in service plan is something like 2.5 to 3 weeks.

Each Best Buy does not repair your computer within the store because they don't have the staff or for the most part the knowledge to fix them.
