Which DVD writer?

Hi,

Am looking to purchase a DVD writer later today and thought I would ask this forums expert opinion on the matter.

I understand the going price at the moment is approx £200 ($300 ish I think) which is fine. I just need to know which player would you advise to try and side step the problems with the different DVDr formats?

I have heard that a certain manufacturer has come up with a multi-format drive which covers the 2 main formats. This is all the info. I have on this though.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

If you're worried about formats, then go with the Sony DRU-500A, it supports both the DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW formats. It retails for ~$325. For about $200, you can pick up a drive that supports just the DVD-R/RW standards. It's anyone's guess as to which one will come out on top, so it's up to you. I personally got a Pioneer DVR-105 for $225, which is a DVD-R/RW drive. If I had the extra $100 I would have gotten the Sony, though.

Also, if i buy this sony drive, wil I have to buy seperate blanks for both formats or should any work for either format?

Each format requires it's own type of Disc (ie. DVD-R and DVD-RW vs DVD+R DVD+RW)
