I'm looking for a DVD-ROM but confused about the brand. Which brands are good?? I'm thinking of LiteOn, Sony and LG. Please suggest me good DVD-ROM between these...!!

Just get the one you like best in terms of looks. They are all pretty much the same drive anyways made by one company.

NEC doesn't make DVD-ROM drives any more - stopped about 2 years ago. So if you think you'd be getting the same quality drive as a 3520A or something, you're wrong - the latter is indeed made by NEC, while the DVD-ROM and CDRW series are outsourced to some company like Samsung or Lite-On, that's for sure.

Liteon makes many (most?) of the drives for other companies. they supply them and the company rebadges them. Not true for nec dvd burners.

After doing lot of search, I found that there are two LiteOn DVD-ROMs. Namely SOHD-16P9S and SOHD-167T. It seems 167T is very good performer that other one. But is it discontinued by LiteOn or it is still available??

The Asus DVD ROM drive is also excellent, but it's becoming hard to find as the DVD burners are getting so cheap. The AOpen 1648 (mfr'd under license from Pioneer) is excellent too. Pioneer slot-load DVD ROM drive is VERY COOL - even the Pioneer tray load is good, but they are also hard to find.

I'm looking for a rip drive- companion for my new 3520A....which good DVD-ROMs are available?? It seems LiteOn SOHD-167T was good drive, but still can't find it anywhere..!! After DVD-RWs are popular we hardly can find good ROMs...!!

basically a bump..
can someone suggest the best drive under $20-25, preferably? i think most drives are loud by any standards...when running they make the most sound of anything else in ur computer..so it doesnt really matter for me. Anything good quality would work for me.

The AOpen 1648 /AAP (made under license from Pioneer) is excellent at just under $25. OEM at newegg. As is the Asus DVD-E616P2 which is about $26. for the retail package and a dollar or two less for the OEM depending on color.

Optical drive "Technology Partners"
Sony - LiteOn.
Toshiba - Samsung
Hitachi - Goldstar (LGE)
Plextor - Sanyo
Benq - Philips
AOpen - mostly Ricoh (some Pioneer)
NEC - Pioneer
