OK, so lets put one of our highly skilled evil Imperial pilots into an UNSHIELDED fighter without MISSILES. |-o-|

And then, to top it off, we'll install two humongous blinders to give said pilot tunnel vision .. . |-o-|

the same guy that designed the x-wing with no backward visibility and a giant nose blocking the pilot's vision ahead: george lucas

The later models (Read: TIE ADVANCED) didn't suck nearly as much, but by the time they were rolling out, the rebels had already won.

I don't know, but that ascii work is very enjoyable. Can you make that into a game somehow that I can play while I'm bored.

Yeah, because when you're going 20 million miles per second, the only way you want to see is through a foggy windsheild.
They have computers in those things, you know. Computers that can sense things. In all sorts of directions.

The more important question is why the hell they even have all these 'wings'. A fricken tube would be cheaper and work just as well.

Some dude or team at Sienar fleet systems. The wanted a cheap fighter that was easy to make and fly. Those large "blinders" give the ship alot of it's power and by not putting shields or any life support (the pilots are in space suits) you make the fighter faster and more powerful without a large generator.

Just showing my true geek colors...

OK--Then why bother with windows at all? Any why didn't Obi-Wan use the Force to shove those parasites off his fighter?

The wings were for flight inside an atmosphere and for carrying ordinance

1) Because things outside are pretty.
2) Because Star Wars has some serious continuity problems.

The X-Wing doesn't really need rearward visibility, since you've got the Astromech (Think R2) on the top. They warn if there are enemies nearby.

And you forgot the TIE Bomber

You need a vid screen inside that shows what the astromech sees. :p

Hehheh, the bomber would actually look more like this:

{O-0}

because the ordnance pod is smaller than the main pod. (Though I forget if the ordnance pod is starboard or port side.)
