X was pretty crap, relatively speaking to the Final Fantasy series.
Did you really think so? I thought that FFIX was pretty bad, and ruined a concept that could have worked out well. VIII, I liked, but most people didn't. And then going all the way back through NES and SNES days, there were some timeless gems, but it's a bit hard to compare those to today's because they're so different.
Final Fantasy X lost me for a few reasons. The graphics were fantastic, the story was okay, but I didn't much chare for the characters, their personalities, the linear point-to-point style gameplay with the minimap in the corner pointing the way, or the lack of a true world map to explore.
On a smaller note, I also don't care for the voices. I wish I could just turn them off. They ruin the experience for me rather than enhance it. But that starts to tie in to the "it's way too cinematic" complaint, which I wont go into.
I didn't care much for the sphere grid idea either. I don't think it's too difficult to come up with interesting ways to customize your own characters without arbitrary systems and interfaces that require learning curves, babysitting, or more item gathering. (Though it wasn't nearly as bad as the draw/junction system, and for that I'm thankful.)
Personal little gripes against the game aside, I still didn't care for it very much. I just didn't care for the way that it played, all things considered. I've had a lot more fun playing other RPG's, especially other Final Fantasy games.
