Which do you guys prefer: QuickTime or Windows Media Player?

Running Windows, which player do you guys think is better and why? For my purposes, I'll use the player mostly for watching news clips on CNN.com, Foxnews.com, MSN.com, and other sites. And maybe an occasional DVD or CD. But this question could apply for the other applications the players are used for too.

EDIT: And besides features/characteristics, does either perform with better quality than the other? Like higher resolution, or more bits-per-whatever :p, or in any other way?

WMP. QT is for MOV files mainly, and it has a pervasive bad habit of trying to take over one's machine, desktop, tray and everything else.

The new WMP 11 really is nice. I keep both on hand, but I keep a tight rein on QT. :)

Yuck, neither. If I had to choose though, WMP. To play .mov and .qt crap, get quicktime alternative, available on the usual download sites (majorgeeks, etc.)

i have a mac, and there's a plugin to run windows media content in quicktime. anytime i stream video i miss wmp badly. quicktime standalone is fine, it works fine, but the other part just isn't as good. unfortunately MS has abandoned WMP on os x in favor of the QT plugin. so i'd have to go with WMP, altho VLC is nice (won't do wmp3 on mac, so sad).

Quicktime alternative is questionably legal, since it contains a cd from quicktime 7 pro, which is not free software. If find it doesn't work on many sites (such as apple's movie trailer site), probably becuase that cd key has been banned from those sites.

Quicktime is the only player that embeds into webpages and still works properly. I will pick quicktime every time for stuff that's delivered inside a webpage.

For a standalone player I use VLC for everything except WMV and MOV files, which get played with thier respective native players. I wont watch real media files at all.

Flash seems to be the standard on all the big video sites these days.

i guess WMP but i got qt cause i have an ipod. i use the K-Lite Codec pack which has MPC and almost every codec out-there. here's a secret: if you have qt installed, the k-lite codec pack installs a username and password whih gives you qt pro. not sure about the lastes version, but worked for me for qt 7 something. thius allows easy ipod movies and such.

I only use MPC. You can install QT alternative for QT playback. I don't install any codec packs.

The question is very simple. A choice of A or B. Why all the gratuitous nonsense about other personal preferences? RTFQ!

I personally like VLC.

More info? I've never heard of it. Link maybe? :D

Pretty popular, and it is videolan.org. It has pretty much every video codec for a 32 bit platform out there.

I prefer quicktime over wmp, if I have a choice.

I use VLC for standalone content.

VLC has my favorite feature in a software product, "It just works." That is really all I want.

WMP11. I like it, as it is sleek and stable, even in Beta. I use it for everything: video, music, etc. I do have MPC and VLC installed just in case I find something I can't play in WMP11. For older machines, however, MPC is awesome as it need very few resources to run acceptably.

I am forced to use iTunes and Quicktime because of my iPod, and I find it slow and clunky. I'd never use it as my main media player.
