You can install Debian directly from the Internet if you just download the ~100M netinstall disc.

I've heard that Xandros has great hardware detetion, but I've tried Mepis and it certainly does. Mepis is very easy to install and use. Unfortunately, I've had issues with their repository. Ubuntu is a very popular distro with a huge community forum, but imho doesn't detect hardware as well as Mepis.

You can download one Slackware disc and install using that. The only downside is that you don't get some text tools and KDE.

Some distros like SUSE have a Net install option where download a tiny ISO (~100MB, SUSE's is 70ish) and the installer will download everything else you ask for. Saves downloading CD after CD of crap you'll never use.

But yeah, (K)Ubuntu, Xandros, MEPIS, maybe some others.

Oh yeah, heaps of LiveCD distros will do HD installs, if you want to do that. Knoppix, DSL (above), SLAX etc.
