Which distro has the best documentation?

Gentoo definitely has the most votes. Now how much of this is due to the fact Gentoo might be the most widely-used linux distro on anandtech? Have there been any polls on anandtech users' preferred distro? Just curious.

In any case I believe Gentoo has good documentation because I took a gander at it a while back.

I don't think there has been a poll recently.

Hmmm I would set one up but I gotta hit the sack and the thought of entering all those distrowatch distros makes me sick. 😛

How many should be included? Maybe the top ten of distrowatch and then OTHER? :/

Nah, if people want to know about Linux, give them Linux. The BSDs could very well go under OTHER. I'll check slackware myself.

gentoo docs really help you learn how the linux distro works. it wont teach you things liket he ins outs of say /proc, but runlevels, drive slicing, etc. i think if someone were really determined to learn linux hardcore, then they would crack open LFS... nothing teaches u how something works than building it yourself!!

Heh, I had problems with the newest bleeding edge 2.6.7-r1-love-sources kernel, so I was able to talk directly to the development guy who maintains the kernel on the gentoo forums. He patched the kernel because of one of my posts, and I re-downloaded the newly patched kernel. Running it with no probs right now.

It's kind of documentation when you can talk to the devs themselves 🙂

Most projects have a mailing list that the developers atleast monitor. I actually read some mailing lists looking for particular developers because they usually have something good to say. 😉

Yeah, but I actually was able to have a conversation with the guy over a few hours, and he made a patch and told me about it right in the thread there. Kinda cool to me at least.

It's definitely cool, but not unique. 😉 There are some developers that are all over the place trying to help, and others that just sit back and code. They're both necessary these days. 🙂
