Which designers make good suits?

I'm looking to buy new suits towards the end of summer, I'm slimming down quite a bit and I want to treat myself with maybe 4 or 5 nice year round type suits. I generally spend about 200-400 dollars on my suits, but I would'nt mind spending more for really nice ones.

I'm really only interested in 3 button suits, I never cared for double breasted suits or the kinds with 12 buttons and 7 different colors. I'm basically looking for a few really nice conservative but well made suits.

any suggestions

I thought Armani and Hugo Boss are a few steps above BR as far as price goes

Armani

cause I'm persian and I have to say it or I'll get shot by the persian mafia for dissing their brand of display.

I go for custom fit over designer brands like Armani. My last suit is from Brook's Brothers, and I like it a lot.

I guess if I could get a custom Armani that would be one thing.

Fit is more important then any brand.

One brand may be poor fitting and thus looking on you compared to another person.

I went with this one dark grey Hugo Boss suit, as it fitted me better. I then had the suit cut by some tailers in Cambodia in 3 different fabrics.

My first suit was one from 3 day suit brokers or something and it was hemmed and adjusted for me.

My last suit was a 38S from banana republic with one of their 30/30 pair of wool pants. Fits me great in my opinion.

EDIT: Yea, suits from the Armani and Boss stores cost more then the BR ones, unless you got them on clearance or sale or something.

Claiborne has some really nice suits. I tried a few on last year and they all fit really well.

Hickey Freeman, Joseph Abboud, Zegna, Armani

Hickey Freeman makes gorgeous suits in the $1200 - $2000 range.

lol, beat me to it.

I would take a better fit over a brand name anyday. However, I once had a really nice Oscar de la Renta, and a Claiborne. I wore the Oscar, snagged and tore the jacket. And the following week I did the same to the Claiborne. I have no luck with suits.

Both of those seemed custom to me. But I haven't had luck finding those suits again.
The Claiborne was double breasted, which is a no-no to some. But I looked great in it.

I have a Burberry suit and a Boss suit. You just missed the Macys yearly 40% off sale, i also stacked a 20% coupon on stop of it, making my $900 (pre-tax) $460 w/ tax.

A good tailor will beat those guys hands down. And probably cheaper too.

dillard's (if you have them) is running a sale right now.. 25-30% off which increases up to 50% in the next few weeks.

i picked up 2 for under 375 each. one of them was a Super 130's - very nice weight to it.

OTOH, i also paid ~850 each for 2 suits from Tom James - they custom build suits. they come out and measure you and let you pick the fabrics.. send the measurements off. then bring it in for 1 or 2 fittings and alterations.. voila - custom suit albeit a bit expensive.

Exactly. OP: Get a custom-tailored suit and it'll be better than any off-the-rack suits from the brands you mentioned

The brands/designers you listed have more contemporary cuts with flat front pants. Shouldn't be a problem usually (and might look better on you if you're a younger guy), but wouldn't fit in some business conservative environments. Just a thought.

You might want to check out Bluefly.com, and look at the men's suit section for some brands (sounds like what you're looking for).

I really hate wearing suits in general, but I do like my Hugo Boss.

It was expensive since I needed it on short notice but I still like it.

Hate to dig up this old thread but FYI Saks is having an awesome sale right now. 33% off the lowest ticket price, I picked up a Hugo Boss suit that was $800 for $317. If they do not have your size on the sale rack, they can call the other stores to see if another has your size (still the same sale price).
