which degree do you think would lead to the best job opportunities?

I've been debating between 3 programs for awhile, figured it couldn't hurt to ask the thoughts of a bunch of complete strangers...

MLIS, MS in tech writing, or a degree in english lit to teach either high school or (preferably) college.

If you go for MLIS check out Canada, much cheaper than the U.S. generally and nobody cares where you got it, it is just a hurdle you have to jump though. From what I read though librarians are very negative about job prospects, I compare what I read from them to what I read about lawyers. If you want to teach there might be better options out there than a Masters in liberal arts, those jobs are competitive from what I understand. Might be better off with a 1-year teaching certificate program, or if you have the grades some places might pay you to learn how to teach.

edit: I should add that from what I understand it is universally agreed that any news of librarian shortages are absolutely false. You have to want to be a librarian and be fine with low pay. So MLIS is a horrible choice for "best job opportunity," but great if you want that career

Those are all horrible choices. I have nothing more to say on this matter.

well, I don't have the math chops to pursue a serious career with my undergrad sociology major, so I'm trying build on my english major as I try and figure out wtf I want to do when I grow up 🙂

There's lots of degrees in nothing chasing no nothing jobs. You need to distinguish your self if you want a real pay check.

Depends on what you want to do and what kind of connections you have.

With a tech writing degree you can get some really nice jobs, but you have to find the jobs.

A PhD in English is a good one, there is always going to be a demand for English teachers.

out of the three, the M.S. in tech writing is probably the most marketable and you can land jobs with that at companies as a tech writer

what are your career goals? (if you have any)

my first career goal is to have a career, tbh 😉 since I graduated college, I feel like I've just been moving from jay o bee to jay o bee. I enjoy what I do right now well enough, but I can't see myself running around carrying 70 pound servers and digging under the floors when I'm in my 50's.

money's not super important to me as long as I've got enough to afford a decent place to live, pay my bills, and go on the occasional vacation without stressing. kids aren't in the forseeable future so it's not like I need to be bringing home 6 figures to buy a house, pay for their tuition, etc.

one thing I'd like is a career where I can find employment almost anywhere in the country -- I'm dying to move down south, but working in a data center for a hosting company, I feel like I'm artificially tied to a few select areas of the country (not that I've even been able to find a new data center job :frown🙂

of the 3, I think I'd probably enjoy library science more (combine my love of technology, literature, and total OCD/anal retentive nature), but librarian jobs seem so few and far between.
