Which DDR RAM?

OK I am buying a new system soon. Getting an Asus P4B266 w/ P4 1.6A. I should have bought my RAM earlier but missed the boat. Crucial is up pretty high now I see 🙁. I am going w/ PC 2100 RAM most likely. Should I pay the extra and get Crucial? I have been planning to anyway. Or should I go w/ like Kingston or Mushkin and maybe save some $? I will be overclocking but not a whole lot. I am gonna shoot for 1.6A @ about 2000-2100. Let me know what you guys think I should get for RAM. thanks all.
 
It's real easy to OC your RAM with this board, you should think about doing it. You can get 333Mhz even if you only go to 2.0Ghz (that's 128FSB). You should keep this in the back of your mind when you plan your RAM purchase.

Most people have good luck with PC2100 Crucial, even OCing it . I'd make sure you were getting real Micron chips on your RAM, however. I have some 512Mb Crucial with Infineon chips that I can't get over 311Mhz.

Kingmax 256Mb PC2700 is very highly thought of also. You can get it for around $87/stick. You can get massive OC's from this RAM

Corsair, Mushkin, the PC2700 Samsung, there's some real good sh*t out there right now. If you stick with these choices I think you'll be real happy.
 
Since you only want 2100MHz (131.25FSB), any PC2100 will do just fine.

16(multiplier of the 1.6A chip) x 128 (target FSB for a 2.0 to 2.1Ghz OC) = 2.048Ghz. 128 FSB with a 3:4 memory divider (which is available on the P4B266) gives a memory speed of 340Mhz.

125FSB gives 333Mhz with a 3:4 divider.

In other words, he can OC just a little but use the 3:4 memory divider to push his RAM speed up to PC2700 levels and get the benefits of greater memory speed.
 
Thanks, I was not aware that 3:4 was faster ram timings. I kept thinking of it as 4:3. 😉
 
i just spent all the money thinking about the future. i opted for cosair 2400 ddr. =P gotta admit though.. it's was freakin expensive.

Me too. So far it has performed flawlessly (@149 fsb) at the most aggressive timings. Good shiznit, that's for sure. 🙂
 
Just found that Corair on Newegg for about $200 for 512mb. Really not a whole lot more then Crucial 2100 right now. Thanks for the heads up that looks like some great RAM. Does it overclock well? thanks
 
anyone every bought those el cheapo 512 sticks from pricewatch? ex- USSA.com Anyone know how good are those? They're like 50 bucks cheaper.
 
My 2 sticks of the 512Mb Corsair PC2700 XMS are doing 340Mhz, CAS2, 2.5v in my box. Ran 10hrs in Memtest 86 with zero errors. Getting 2590+ scores in Sandra 2002 memory benchmarks. I don't think you can beat this RAM right now.
 
Cool....looks like good RAM...Paired w/ Asus P4B266 and the PC2700 Corair should be a stud pair. thanks all....not that much more then crucial now either
