The microATX box is very small so I am guessing that a mobile is the way to go. this will probably end up on a abit VA10. I may also be looking for a low profile HSF. What are your recomendations? I dont plan on any overclock.

If this belongs in general hardware....my appologies...thanks for your input

If you need something a bit more powerful, most people are having good luck undervolting the A64 2800+ to 1.2/1.3 volts for a very cool proc.

Get a 1U server heatsink and put a quieter fan on it, most of the time the fans are way too loud.

or go for the mobile athlon 64's. you can get the a64 2800+ at newegg or zipzoomfly. too bad they dont have the mobile 3700+ in stock. i hear it runs at 35W also, but i'm not 100% sure of that.

The problem with this is that the 1U heatsinks are really small, and if you put on a slower fan you might not get enough airflow to dissipate the heat properly.

There are some stock AMD socket A heatsinks that are small enough for a microATX low profile case and give enough clearance for airflow. They might cool a Mobile XP ok.

750 duron - those things run cool. :p

But seriously, get an A64 (a mobile, 35W if they have it) and use cool&quiet - it automatically adjusts your CPU speed to what you are doing. My 2ghz 3000+ used to run at 800mhz most of the time, and I would get temps below ambient with stock cooling. However, I got latched onto distributed computing. :)

I recently rebuilt one of my rigs aroung an ARIA with a Biostar M7NCG-400 and Athlon Mobil 2200+ 35W runing at 1670MHz. For the most part I am very pleased with it. I whished the M7NCG-400 could go under 1.3V, so I am undervolting very little from the 1.35V nominal

If I use a 35W AMD XP-2400+ whose default voltage is 1.35v, will M7NCG adjust the CPU voltage to this default, automatically?

an xp2200 mobile will do 2 gigs at 1.5 vcore thats about 40watts under load if you run it at stock 1.3 vcore i think you could prob passivly cool it for a quiet box
