The comparison is between -

AMD Duron at 800MHz with 64kb L2 on Die or
Intel P3 Celeron 800Mhz (128kb L2 - is this correct?)

Anyway which is better for running office apps and the like as I'm looking at buying a Laptop.

Much appreciated. ;)

I'm pretty sure the Duron would be faster. I am not positive, but it is faster in just about everything else.

First of all, I am pretty sure there are no Duron Laptops and secondly, There is no such thing as a P3 Celeron. The P3 would be faster than a duron which would be faster than a Celeron

Due to the efficiency of the cache architecture the Duron is actually the better bet if you look at it in terms of cache usage compared to the celeron (refer to Anandtech articles about the Athlon/Duron for more info).

In reality, the Duron is the faster overall chip.

Edit: Yeah, there are/were Duron notebooks. Probably will disappear with the introduction of the mobile Athlon 4

The Celeron needs several hundred MHz clockspeed advantage to compete with Duron. At equal clocks, there is no competition. The Duron wipes the floor with it. Let's see ... faster, and about 1/2 or 1/3 the cost ... :)

And yes, there were (and still are) Duron-based notebooks. They're getting fewer and fewer with the Mobile Athlon 4 release, but they're still out there -- and if you know where to look and be patient, you can get a hell of a deal :D

Celerons in laptops run at 100 Mhz FSB. They also use much less power than the duron chips. You'll likely see no noticeable speed difference when running office apps on either, so go with the Celeron.

Thanks for the input guyz.

YES, there are Duron Notebooks for starters. Sony VAIO notebooks use them. Power consumption is not really of too much importance, it is more of a speed issue at this time.

Perhaps some of you might like to suggest a Notebook with funds of £940 or indeed $1300 US.

Please keep the suggestions coming, as I have to make a decision b4 the weekend.

:)

I think the difference would be unnoticable. You should then look at cost, warrrenty and the brand reliablility (service) more
