I'm using a Core 2 Duo E6300 1.8GHz Conroe and it works just fine for everything but HD video encoding. It encodes HD okay, but my computer slows down enough to interfere with my multitasking; for example, watching reruns of 21 Jump Street on Hulu.![]()
Encoding is very CPU intensive. A higher MHz CPU will encode faster, but it still takes up all the cores. You can go quad core as suggested.
Alternately look into GPU accelerated transcoding. AFAIK your choices would be somewhat limited because only a handful of software supports it and they may not be as feature-filled, but they can often do the work in a fraction of the time and with less impact on your existing CPU.
