Which CPU Cooler for 4Ghz OC?

Hello,

I?m in the market for a great CPU cooler for my new setup i7 920 CPU & P6T Deluxe v2 MOBO.

I will be OC this system to a 4Ghz (at least I will try) so the cooler must be good. The only requirement I have is for it not to be over 160.5 mm in height as my Cosmos S case has a 200mm fan on the side that will restrict anything higher. The 160.5mm is a height of a True 120 so I drought there will be problems as most of them I believe don?t exceed this number. If however there is something out there that is truly great but is over 160.5mm please name it I might end up doing some moding to the fan to accommodate & the cooler need to be socket 1366 competable (duhhhh)

Anything with in $100 range works for me. I was originally looking at the ?Ultra-120 Extreme 1366 RT Rev.C? as this is the latest revision of the True 120 from Thermalright. (Rev C is the most improved model correct?)

Thanks

For that price range and for pure cooling power, the Thermalright IFX-14 for every last degree. There are numerous reviews on the web that show it to be pretty top of the line. Otherwise, the True 120 you're looking at will probably be fine although some people complain that the base is sometimes uneven. Alternatively, some people like the Prolimatech Megahalems. They're all pretty close in cooling performance.

Here are my 3 top choices right now.

Thermalright IFX-14
Prolimatech Megahalems
Ultra-120 Extreme RT Rev.C

Thanks for all the input guys. I decided to go with the "Prolimatech Megahalems"

All I need now is select a good Fan to go with it. I have 7 Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F 120mm Fans in my PC and they been working really good for me. here is the link http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835185006

Its been more then a year since I did any good research on fans and would appreciate ur help. It needs to be able to push a lot of air and yet not to be to noise.

Thanks

I'm going to be using my Noctua NH12P, just ordered 1366 mounting kit for it, hopefully it works well. I've looked up a couple reviews of it on i7s and it seems to do pretty well.

I looked at some reviews for the "ULTRA KAZE" and it does a great job cooling but the noise it emits is just very loud! Are there any suggestions for what to get?

I'm thinking about Scythe S-Flex SFF21G 120mm 75 CFM 35 dBA 1900 RPM what you guys think?

Cooler Master V8 seems to work very well for me amd my Q6600 @ 3.2GHz. 1.4v. Keeps it about 57C at full load and ambient room temps at @75F. I bought this one on advice from a friend here on the forums. Comes with 775 and 1366 mounting hardware for the Intel side, and for AMD CPUs AM2/939.
I have plenty of thermal headroom left and could probably hit 3.5 to 3.6 if my chip could handle it.
I don't know how the temp of an overclocked Q6600 compares to a Core i7 920 though.

From what I've read here and at XS, 4GHz on an i7 920 on air is difficult, not impossible by any strech, just difficult. i7 920 at 4GHz, even the best low VID chips, usually require over 1.3V VCore and can consume and therefore have to dissipate over 200W of heat.

I've got one running right now at 3.9GHz on 1.27V, watercooled with an HK 3.0 block, Thermochill 120.3 rad, DDC2 pump (a cpu-only loop) and it does idle at mid-30's, full load temps in upper 50's. Hate to see what an air cooler would give.......(To get my cpu stable at 4GHz and above requires VCores of 1.32V and higher......and temps go up "nicely" as a consequence.)

actually, from what I read, and from my own experiences, 4-4.2 is usually pretty easy with a D0. 4 is usually harder on C0's though, they need massive voltage jumps from 3.8 to 4.

And yes, I am on air, push pull, setup in sig. The TRUE is lapped though. for my 4.2 GHz I use 1.39 Vcore. Temps max at less than 74 C with Linx.

Is that with HT on? Else, 74 C would be pretty cool for 4.2ghz with 1.39 Vcore. For me, at 4.2ghz HT on needs about 1.27 Vcore and I'm already hitting about 75-78 C on TRUE Black Rev. C.

"The" 1366 cooler to beat IMO.

*disclaimer: thats what I run :D

How's the base on your Rev. C? Mine appears to be very flat which I find to be very acceptable to the point where lapping may not provide any gains more than a degree. Deducing from a few tests, Rev. C should be just as good as Megahalems:

TRUE Copper vs Megahalems

TRUE Copper vs TRUE Black Rev. C

As well:

Seems like the only advantage Megahalems has over current revision TRUE's are noise management due to wider fin spacing and flow management in design. Megahalems does this though, at the expense of larger size.

I'm going to guess it's off. On my D0 at 4.2 21x200, it uses 1.29vcore. Under a true 120 extreme lapped with two 1600rpm push/pull s-flex fans. HT is on, prime pushes it to 80-82, idles at 40-42, and for general gaming usage sits at about 60 or so.

This is in a haf 932 with 9 120mm fans...
