mechBgon: I am running a RAID 1 at the moment for purely redundancy. So upping to a RAID 5 will give me the benefits of RAID 0 and RAID 1, no? As for running RAID5, I would like to do it, just to try if not anything else but the key point is to do it as cost effective as possible. Is that possible, probably not.

calvink: Where we live, there is no cable. We have satalite TV only. SDSL is almost as expensive as a T-1 at the same speeds so we decided to go with a T-1.

I just built up the Epox 4g4a+ and Celeron 2.0 ghz machine, i put it up to 20x133 and it's running 2600mhz at stock voltage. Going to be running prime95 overnight to see it's stability. I'm psyched, nice overclock!! The celeron is a D1 stepping SL6VY.

You get fault tolerance w/ raid 5 & can use addl. spares. You'd have to be crazy to use raid 0 for any type of web server or business app.

I recomend 3Ware for ide raid systems they have several cards . ie the 4 channel is for a 32bit pci slot.
their 8 & 12 channels do raid 5 & 10 but are 64bit cards.

If you go w/ scsi , I recommend Mylex (LSI) , Mylex made the PERC cntrls. that went into Dell servers.
then LSI bought them out. Scsi is even more robust that the 3Ware ide based cards.

You can put 15K rpm drives w/ 3 channels w/ 15 drives per channel. But you have to consider what your requirements are.
You don't want to over spend.

If you want scsi on a 32bit pci , then look at the AcceleRaid 170 & the 170LP(160) cards.

The bad thing about 64bit pci on Intel mobo's, (cost wise) is that you have to get a Xeon Serverworks based mobo which are about $500-$600 just for the mobo. But you get what you pay for.

This is why I recomend the 3Ware 4 channel ide card, its 32 bit pci. You may be able to locate an older ver. of their 8 channel card , it was 32 bit pci.
