Which console should I geT?

I am in the market for a console. I been a PC gamer since the SNES.

I am not really sure what to get.

My wife loves mario stuff and old Nintendo things.
Sister loves sports games
I love fighting and action shit

Not really sure what to get. I think we'd have a blast with the wii, but I am not so sure if it will have good fighting games or any really good games, not to mention the graphics.

PS3 seems kind of expensive with the move stuff, but has the most technology and will last longer, not to mention BLU RAY play.

Xbox, well I have a broken xbox which my friend game me. I could try to fix that, but i am not sure if that is worth it as it may break again and i'd have bought games for it and then i'd be stuck into buying another xbox. Plus I have to pay for xbox online play. Have NO interest in getting the Kinect

Any recommendations and experiences?

I imagine there will be good bundles this holiday season so don't want to miss out on it.

Oh good lord....hold on, getting my lawnchair...

So I take it that you, the wife, and the sister will all see a lot of playing time on said console, or will it mostly be just one person?

I'd say get a wii. Probably the console that would come closest to satisfying all 3 of you.

The Wii is best for local multiplayer - 2+ people playing in front of the same TV.

Xbox 360 and PS3 are pretty weak for local multiplayer but are much better online and single player. Wii single player games aren't good IMO. I know some people love the Mario/Zelda/Metroid games but they just don't measure up to single player games on the other consoles.

Then again a PS3 with Move sort of fulfills both the "hardcore" and "casual" gaming niches, albeit at a pretty high price.

Another option is to try to get two - find a 360 at a low price, maybe the 4GB slim model, and also get a Wii. Should cost about the same as a PS3 + Move. Or even get a GameCube instead of a Wii for casual and local multiplayer gaming. The selection isn't as good but GameCubes are crazy cheap these days.

Sounds like you're going to have to compromise for the wife and sister and lean towards the Wii or start getting interested in Kinect. AstroMan above pretty much nailed it. There's nothing right now that gives you current-gen graphics with great local multiplayer games and awesome "dudebro" fighters/shooters in a cheap package.

The closest thing to that is a 360 with Kinect, but you're sacrificing cost. If you go with the Wii, you're sacrificing the types of games you like and online play.

I have the 3 major consoles and if I was held to just one, I'd get a Wii because my wife loves playing Mario and Donkey Kong games and we can play it together for hours at a time. She never sees anything she likes for the 360 or PS3.

xbox360 if you like online multiplayer and features.
ps3 if you like single player games.
wii if you like very casual multiplayer games.

This is the tough part, Mario is REALLY specific. If that's an absolute must you're kinda stuck at the Wii.

Wii: Mario and "Old Nintendo" stuff
PS3/360: Much better Sports/Fighting/Action games.

Honestly if you all are casual gamers the Wii will be great. If you don't plan on playing online or VERY rarely it's got that capability in limited quantities. For local multiplayer, especially with the girls, it cannot be touched. You can stream Netflix, surf the web, make Mii's, etc. But, if you are a more hardcore gamer I think you may get bored with it (I did...twice).

If it comes down between the other two purebeast gave you the short answer really well.

The 360 has what most consider to be a superior online experience, BUT you have to pay anywhere from $30-50/year to use it (depending on what sort of a sale you can find on the cards). It's got bigger name exclusive first person shooter franchises (Halo, Gears of War), pretty much all of the big sports games, and the upside is that most big budget multi-platform games are designed on the 360 so they will look/run better on the console than on the PS3. Xbox Live Arcade may have alot of games that the Mario loving wife would like (lots of older games, alot of puzzle games, etc).

The PS3 on the other hand has free online, a BluRay player, and a solid title lineup. The online portion doesn't have as many features and doesn't seem to run nearly as smoothly as Xbox Live, but if you don't play much online this won't matter to you. I get the feeling that the Mario loving wife may really like LittleBigPlanet, the PSN store has alot of older games as well.

In the end you're going to have to compromise somewhere, so find what fits you and the other user's needs the best.

And Queasy, what are the chances that we could create an official "What console should I buy" thread, gather opinions from everyone on strengths and weaknesses of each console, and then sticky/lock it?

There's a surprising amount of variety on every console now. I'd say the Wii is the least all-around machine, but it still has some action titles that I believe are good - Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Trauma Center and some others. 360 is the most versatile console, but PS3 holds its own by having decent variety, free online and a number of top-notch exclusives.

Personally, I think the most important thing about consoles is choosing what the majority of your friends have. I've seen time after time many people buying a PS3 and then selling it for an Xbox 360 due to the fact their friends mostly have Xbox 360's, though each situation does depend on the buyer.

They're both great consoles either way.

Thanks so much for the advise. I appreciate it. Not really super stuck on mario, just I can imagine that she will like those kinds of games as she has played them before.

Do you guys think then fixing up the xbox is the best choice then?

How are fps games other shooters on the wii? I see that black ops is also for the wii, do you have to use the motion control for it or can u play it other ways?
How do they work?

I've only played one shooter on the Wii, and that was Metroid Prime 3. Basically you move with the thumbstick on the nunchuk and aim by pointing the wiimote. I am not a huge fan of wiimote pointing because it seems less precise to me, but at least everyone online has the same controls.

I'd avoid games like Call of Duty on the Wii anyway. For those games, they put the most effort into the 360 and PS3 versions and only release a Wii version because it means a few extra sales. It's usually really watered down and not really the same game.

If you get a Wii intending to do any amount of serious single-player gaming, you're going to be really disappointed. It's really best for local multiplayer and casual games. Then again, to be fair, the Xbox 360 (at least without Kinect) is just as disappointing for local multiplayer. There are a few good ones but it's heavily single player (and online multiplayer) focused.

From your description it seems like PS3 might be best. Little Big Planet has the warm fuzzies of Mario. All major sports and fighters are multiplatform, plus dual shock dpad. Move is like Nintendo motion, only better. Blu ray is always nice if you have an HDTV. And PSN is free.

But you should be honest and base it on who will really use it more. If you are going to mainly game on your PC, and its more for your wife and sister, get a Wii. And its not like buying a car or something, you can always get 360/PS3 for yourself later. Life is much better when the women in your life are happy.

Apathy, will you guys actually be playing together, or do you just want to have a console you all can use (at separate times)?

PSN (and probably xbox Live but I can't comment on that) will have additional titles his wife might appreciate. Flower, PixelJunk games, echochrome...there are a few games that the casual crowd would probably appreciate.

Yeah, I would recommend PS3 for LBP. It's a damn good family game with no violence or anything, just tons of creativity and fun.

Also lots of other games on PSN. Also the Move supports up to 4 players if you wish.

Sports (NFL, NHL, NBA), fighting, action will be much better on the PS3 and 360 than on the wii. Graphics will be a little better on the 360 but you pay an extra $40/year for online and netflix and you lose blu-ray.

If you skip Move you can get the $300 PS3 holiday bundle at Amazon with 2 games and $25 credit for a future game.

Wii will get you Mario, waggle-based sports (tennis, etc.) and party games but other sports (Madden, etc.), fighting and action games will suffer from the low-res graphics and slow processor.

PS3 + Wii is one option, but sets you back $500.

We've had a Wii for a while and have had lots of fun. I grew up with all the Nintendo consoles and love the Nintendo exclusives. But I've bought a few multi-platform games on the Wii and regretted it every time. So we just got a PS3 as well. I will now never buy anything for the Wii but the Nintendo exclusives (I plan to buy DKC and Zelda), and for other games I will make the choice on each one whether to get the PS3 version or the PC version.

Two things swayed me to the PS3 over the 360: most of my friends have one, and the PS3 exclusives seemed more to my taste. Ratchet & Clank look amazing, and LBP is pretty freakin cool.

It's in the FAQ thread already....not that anybody READS the FAQ thread. 😛

No, no they don't. Seriously, you oughta consider making a new thread and posting the info from there in it.
