is there a huge difference between State Farm, All State, Century 21, Geico, Farmers, AAA? I mean, they just insure your car afterall, if my car get damaged, would one company pay more than the other?

also anyone buy car insurance from those "smaller" relatively unknown companies? they have really really cheap rates but there MUST be a downside to it right?

EDIT: so basically my next question is what PlasticJesus has answered (what a prophet :) ),

do you feel at all comfortable with buying insurance from those "smaller" relatively unknown companies?
i am gonna buy Liability only, so I doubt i will goto make claims that often.

been with them since '87 , back when you had to be military or a government employee (it stands for Government Employees Insurance Company) to get insurance from them

my wife has been in 4 accidents (

, ok all but one wasn't legally her fault) during that time and they haven't substantially raised our rates

USAA. Just recently switched after being with GEICO for about 17 years. I bought 2 new vehicles and added a renters insurance policy and they still beat GEICO by about $200 a year.

I have Geico too. I hate car insurance shopping. I think I called 3 or 4 different insurance companies at the time I bought the policy, and they were the cheapest. I think if I had spent more time shopping for it, I could have found a better price.

geico here

they weren't the cheapest, but i have them for now

state farm was cheaper, but for some reason wants EVERYONE in my household to have state farm as well, which wasn't convenient

got a speeding ticket a while ago though, so curious to see if geico is gonna screw me over soon...

Progressive! :) I didn't do much comparison shopping, but I'm pretty happy with the rates.

Cotton States insurance for me. Their rates were competitive at the time I signed up with them. Haven't done much looking since then. That's been a couple of years ago. It's probably time to do some more shopping!

Prudential, I live in NJ so no matter where you go you take a beating on rates. :(

All-State for me. I've gotten great rates -- the only time they've raised them was when Houston had its big flood last year -- everybody was making claims on their flooded-out car.

I've got Erie. East coast company based out of Erie, PA. Their rates beat the pants off of the big boys and the phone/internet companies. Good customer service and a friendly local agent.

USAA works well for me. I am 22 with a 93 probe and I have full insurance for ~525 every 6 months. Not bad IMO.

I've had GEICO forever. None of the major companies have been able to beat their rates for us.
No complaints about claims or customer service.

i have AAA for my cars and Progressive for my bikes. I went with progressive b/c they had the cheapest rates and AAA because my parents have them and i got a group/multiple vehicle discount. AAA sucks. They're the worst insurance i've ever had. Granted, i may be a newer driver and been in some accidents, but they're coverage sucks. I burned out my trans after avoiding an accident and they neglected to cover me...burning $2000 in my pocket. Other times, the claims adjuster denied that things had anything to do with an accident like when my rims got scratched beyond buffing, he said it was clearly not due to the accident. I don't know..they're in business to make money just like everybody else, but i hate AAA.

If it weren't for the fact that i have so many points on my license and was able to switch like you older/safer drivers, i would in a heart beat.

btw...i've been accident/ticket free for about six months now.

USAA here. I would not feel at all comfortable with buying insurance from those "smaller" relatively unknown companies.

There can certainly be a difference in how much they pay and in what order they specify where replacement parts come from.

The best I ever had was State Farm while I was stationed in Monterey, CA. Had a reflector panel cracked on rear of '94 Maxima SE. Went to State Farm office and left with two checks: one for replacement of panel using original part and the other check was for half of what it would normally cost to install the new panel because I was doing it myself.

Left the States and when came back to Texas, State Farm wasn't writing new policies. Got USAA. USAA's order of replacement parts is something like first they'll try to find a part that some 8-year old Guatemalan kid produced, then next the body shop could get one from a junk yard, and then third you might can get an original part.

I can't imagine that cheap, no-name insurance pays. Surely they send you through nine yards of crap before settling any claim.

Really? I've been with them for 5 years, and no one has been able to beat they're pricing for me. I've received quotes from Geico, Progressive, State Farm and a few others, and Farmers has them beat by almost $20/month.

I spoke with an auto body shop owner a few weeks ago about insurance and he said to stay away from Progressive. He said they will not reimburse you if you get into an accident for a lot of things and you will end up paying a lot more out of your pocket if you go with them.

He said the best he deals with are NJ Manufacturers, All-State, State Farm, Prudential. This is just in NJ by the way.

I've got Prudential because State Farm is dropping alot of people in Jersey. Me included.
