My wife has asked for a new Discman for Christmas, and she said that all she really wants is a unit that is loud enough to drown out the noise of the treadmills at the gym.

Anyone have any suggestions?

May I suggest better headphones rather than blasting her eardrums to pieces while exercising?

sennheiser HD280's cut about 30 db, about the same as a pair of earplugs. but they are full over-ear headphones and probably too bulky for running. i'd really go with in-ears if it was me... but whatever she gets, it's important that she not blast it because she will cause permanant hearing loss.

From the ones I have used, the iRiver models are much louder @ max volume than anything else.

in-ear headphones are a good way to get loud headphones. no way you will hear anything with them on

Portable CD players have absolutely no bass output. It is kinda disappointing to my MDRV700's.

Get the cheap Ety's. 125 bucks for near par performance of the high end ones. And the noise isolation, she wont be hearing anything. :)

excellent. i have a few other high-regarded pairs (portapros, mx400, hd497, px200, px100), and i still think the ksc-35 are the best sounding and most comforatble of them all..but they are not closed headphones at all and are bad in terms of blocking outside noises

sony in ear noise canceling headphones. ~150 dollars. ear buds block noise and are ultra efficient, player output quality more important then power. u have enough power to go deaf using ear buds on any player. don't get big headphones for working out, sop up sweat and all the nastiness...and bulk is bad.

if you must amp http://www.headsave.com/ here are some quality units:) or if u want to drive audiophile cans:p

and get her a solid state mp3 player, 256-512mb versions are out that are decent. discmen don't go well with working out, bulk ick! iriver 256-512mb are good, includes fm too.
