which color coding wire of my phone jack is for data

I'm not sure your phone cable actually has a 'data' wire. The copper wires in your phone travel to a single pair in your phone junction box. You have 4 wires in your phone cable, but I believe only two are actually used to transmit the data. That 1 pair of wires carries the voice and the data transmission. On an analog modem connection, the connection is generated by beeps, whistles, and other tones. Your information is sent to the modem on the other end, whcih picks up those tones and translates the info to bits & bytes and such.

if you are getting disconnected frequently, you could have noise on your phone line causing the interruption, or possibly your ISP sucks and just has that habit of disconnecting. AOL is infamous for random disconnects. What modem connect speeds are you getting when you dial-in? Assuming you have a 56k modem, the max seems to be 54,666. (I used to get that frequently before I got DSL. brag, brag) In my old apartment, i was lucky if I could get above a 42k connection, and before I upgraded my system and got a new modem, I could only get a 31,200 connection. if you are connecting at slower speeds, you probably have noise on your line that is limiting the speeds and may be causing the random disconnects. If you can hear the noise on a voice call, contact your phone company and request they check the line. If you have a wire maintenance plan with them, you should be able to get them to visit your residence to physically check the jacks for problems.
