I can't figure out which cell phone os is superior, the Palm os, whatever is on the Blackberry, Or windows mobile 5/6.

I'm looking for one that has a good selection of software available for it and supports java,
multimedia features are a huge plus.

Where's the best place to get free and commercial PDA/Cellphone software anyway?

Well, Palm seems to like WM since many of their new models use it...

The only "smartphone-esque" OS I've had is WM5/6, and I've had no real issues with it. I like it.

if there are perticular types of aplications ur looking for then u should probably look them up and see which platform(s) they are available on. the palm and blackberry OS's are pretty user friendly and stable in my opionion, but on the other hand i think the windows OS is more powerful but much less stable (much like windows). and a great site that has a huge software selection is www.handango.com

I expected subjective answers, but I am glad you admitted you were BlackBerry biased.

As far as what I'd like to run, I guess it varies, I like the fact of listening to music(go OGG VORBIS!) watching videos(Quick time formatted, mp4, Mpeg, Mpeg2).
java apps are a big plus, and passworded file security is a bonus. And basic office software of course :p

I like the Apple OS used on the iPhones - not that I have a lot of experience with smartphones. But it's fast, responsive, and hasn't crashed on me yet.

Having used palm, BB, and windows mobile (apple/iphone to me isnt a true smartphone untill they fully allow 3rd party support), Right now, Id have to say WM just barely edges out BB, with Palm way at the back. WM broad support wins it for it barely. At first, I didnt like BB very much (the 6290 I had was very buggy, had to reset it at least 5x per day), but the email cant be beat. Now that they are releasing phones with what consumers want (cameras, music players, wifi), I think they could go places. But in true M$ fashion, I think they will buy RIM someday (it's been rumored before). Palm was the king back in the day, but Palm OS5 has been outdated for a few years now. Their next os will be based of linux from what I understand. But what I think is most exciting is the potential for openmoko, a open source linux based platform. I dont think its quite ready for the big time yet, but in a year or two, this could be the os of the future.

I think symbian is easiest to use, but as far as most powerfull, still got to stick with WM.

I have a Blackberry as well as a Treo 700WX

For fun and apps I say the Treo is the winner...

For productivity, email, sms etc the Blackberry is the winner....

I'll nominate Verizon's interface for the "What the F$@% Were They Thinking?" Award.

As someone who has used WM for a long time and has also used the blackberry os for work, I think that apple OSX is much better than both. After using my iphone for a few months, i cant see going back (no matter how much I want the HTC Tilt or dual Touch)

However, if you're looking for java and 3rd party software, I'd recommend WM.

Windows Mobile is the best because you can do a lot more with it.

The down side is that its a POS when left stock.

I find it hard to even consider PalmOS anymore. It's been a dinosaur for years.

WM historically offers a wide range of 3rd party applications and flexibility/hackability. Many people say this comes at the expense of stability and speed, I blame most of this on carrier-bloated ROMs (crapware, anyone?). WM6 offers some increase in speed and stability in my experience. I find the Smartphone variant to improve even more on speed & stability. Going from TMobile MDA with stock ROM to MDA with hacked WM6 ROM to TMobile Dash with stock WM6 ROM netted improvements in both fields each step of the way.

BB OS is historically stable, with the caveat of a perceived lack of bells & whistles. They've gradually added said features to come to level with WM, however, I have noticed that stability has suffered slightly with added consumer features, but less so than WM in general. They've done a great job improving the speed of a Java-based system.

Symbian is an excellent balance of speed, stability and 3rd party apps. However, I've yet to find Symbian device that truly appeals to me. Either they are lacking some fundamental feature I need, or they're priced into the stratosphere in the US.

OSX on the iPhone is attractive, but the device is a non-starter to me because of pricing, poor enterprise integration, no native 3rd party apps, and lack of hardware keyboard.
