I tried to install a Zip 100 on my mom's computer and it didn't work. I've decided a CDR is probably a better bet to back up her Word documents once a month. Can anyone recommend a new or used CDR drive or what I should look for? Also, are cheap CDR's fine for this application?

Thanks

Try checking the hot deals forum for cheap CD Burners.
As to blank CD's, people tend to dislike the 'cheap one' since its data gets corrupted over time.

I personally have never had this problems, but to play it safe, the best CD-R's are Kodaks, Mitsui, TDK (except for the ones from Taiwan), and Taiyo Yudens. Stuff like Fuji and Imations are sometimes made by Taiyo Yuden as well. You can also check the Hot Deals Forum for prices...
