I need a combo drive for my Shuttle, anyone have any experiences with combo drives? LG drives seem to pretty popular among the SFF crowd but what about any others like Plextor or Samsung?

TIA

IdBuRnS... I've used the Toshiba, Samsung, and LG drives in various computers that I've built for others. It honestly depends greatly on what you want to do with your drive. Personally, since I was building a SFF that was going to sit on my desk, I chose the Toshiba, because in my experience, its the quietest. Its not the fastest, though. The LG is a FAST drive (esp. with burning speed)... but its relatively noisy (about the same as a Lite-On). If you don't care about noise (or its going to be sitting under your desk), go for it. The Samsung that I put in was a specific request by a friend--he's happy with it. Its a bit faster than the Toshiba that I use, and a bit louder. Kind of like a compromise.

Plextor DOES have a good reputation, but I can't say anything about it--I haven't used it. :)

Good luck!

The Samsung 48x24x48 16x SM-348BRAS is the king of combo drives, great reliabiliy, 8MB cache, available in black too..

The 32x/12x DVD Samsung combo drive got rated "Kick-Ass" by Maximum PC for speed, and quiet operation.

THere's Plextor too, the 20x10x40 12x unit, but I can't justify the much higher cost/lower drive speed. I know Plextor rocks, but almost double the price for less speed..

Check Pricegrabber for price/availability

Do you own the online store in your sig? I might just buy from you. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Since I plan on stealthing the drive color isn't really an issue, but black does look good. Also the 8MB buffer of the Samsung is nice.

Yes I do, but I don't want people to think I troll for business here, I'm just opinionated and like to help. :)

Just double-checking, is that drive above, this one?

Yes, the PN is slightly differnet, is SM-348BEASB, meaning OEM (Not retail box, Black color)
