Which cases will fit Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme

I'm having a really tough time finding a $100-150 quality case that will fit this bad boy. Any suggestions? Good airflow and easiness to install are my top concerns. Thanks!

The Ultra-120 should fit in most cases wide enough to use a 120mm rear fan...some possibilities are the Antec P180, Lian-Li PC7, Antec 900, CM Mystique RC632, and Gigabyte 3D Aurora.

The question I constantly want to ask is...why do you want an Ultra-120/Tuniq Tower? Is it really that important to you?

There really is no reason *not* to lower your temps if you know how to install an aftermarket cooler. Granted the Ultra-120/Tuniq are supposed to be for max overclocking on air, but lower temps are always going to extend your component lives and make your system more reliable. IMHO, since there's only about 10 dollar difference between getting a mediocre aftermarket cooler and an 'elite' one, I'd say it's worth the ten bucks. Especially if he's planning to drop $100-150 on a case. But it's not my money. . .

As for the OP. Both the CM Stacker, Lians and the Antec Performance 1 line are all in that price range. All will handle any large heatsink (that I know of). Scratching my head over your question because the Ultra isn't even available yet.

How long does one usually keep a computer in working condition? I'm pretty sure no one keeps a computer past 10 years of service. Even on stock coolers, it'll function fine for more than 10 years. There is NO REASON to get a 50 dollar cooler if you're not overclocking. There's absolutely no point to having an overkill cooler for a part you KNOW will last 10 years on the stock cooler.

Who knows. . . maybe he's putting up a web server and wants close to 100% uptime. Like I said, if he's willing to put that much down on a case, the cooler is just a drop in the bucket. I get your point, though. I'm an overclocker and my SI-120 still works just fine for cooling. The OP question doesn't make much sense because you'd be hard pressed to find a case in his range that doesn't fit the cooler. So perhaps you're right and this guy doesn't really know what he's doing.

I just ordered the Ultra-120 extreme and am a little concerned that it may be too tall for my Thermaltake Tsunami. I have used a HSF in this case that was 150mm tall and it fit, but this ones specs list height as 160.5mm. Should know by the end of the week

Quieter (120mm slow-turning fan) and cooler is generally worth it, yes.

And what's wrong with a Freezer 64 Pro which uses a 92mm fan and still keeps a very decent noise level, a temperature not too far from a Zalman CNPS9500 and costs....less than half the price?

Reading the boards here at AT it's safe to assume a high end air cooler will be used for purposes where a cheaper alternative is not a viable option. Namely overclocking- you lower the temps which in turn *can* provide you with a greater overclock on the CPU.

The choice of a cooler really depends on what the OP wants for his system. For a non-overclocked or lightly overclocked system, then a mid-range cooler is more than OK. However, I think that if the OP is looking into an Ultra-120, then he's more than likely planning to overclock or run the cooler fanless. The latter is not possible with most mid-range coolers (with decent temps, anyway), and the former is also limited by using a mid-range air cooler.

As an example...my Freezer 64 Pro has no issues keeping my 3500+ AM2 cool at 2.8 GHz and 1.344V. However, when I OC a bit more, to 3 GHz and 1.5V, the temps increase rapidly from 39C load to 51C load. At 3.15 GHz and 1.56V, the load temps are well over 55C. Such would not be the case with a full-size, high performance cooler like the Ultra-120.

And the price difference really isn't that great considering the hundreds of dollars people spend on a high-end graphics card or other such components. After all, it only costs about 20 or 30 dollars more than a decent mid-range cooler...for the increase in speed I think that difference is quite reasonable.

Why tear it apart guys? He's just asking what cases will fit the cooler. Did he say he was going to run stock? No. Did he say he is overclocking? No, but with a cooler like that it would probably be a safe assumption.

How about just answering the question at hand instead of tearing apart the reason why he wants it?

Like the others have said, most cases that have a 120mm rear exhaust fan should be able to fit the Ultra 120 extreme. It is the exact same height as the original ultra 120.

Well that was my point, but it's still a bizarre question. I can't think of any quality mid-tower cases in his price range that won't accept the cooler. . . Unless I'm missing something. . .

I have a Coolermaster Wavemaster and this cooler definitely does NOT fit. So now I'm pretty depressed about that and looking for a comparable cooler that's maybe 2 centimeters shorter. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you seen how big these coolers actually are?

I have the Tuniq Tower (which I received today) and I was absolutely stunned at the size when seeing it in person. It's around 6.25" tall. The Ultra is another behemoth cooler and it's a legitimate question.

I find it amazing you guys would even question the usefulness of this cooler. The stock AMD cooler is so annoyingly loud and cools so poorly that for me, coolers like this are required for any PC build I do. In case anyone is interested, I ended up buying an Apack ZeroTherm BTF90 which has cooling almost as good as the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme but it is a few centimeters shorter, just short enough to fit nicely in my Wavemaster case. Silentpcreview did a great review of it.

I can report that the Ultra 120 extreme fits no problem in a Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case, and on an Asus P5B-E motherboard. And it even works while using the HR-05 chipset cooler although you have to orient it up and down instead of front to back.

And even with the 1600rpm fan it is almost dead silent, 10x queiter than the stock fan.
And it immediately knocked 20c off my load temps at 3.2ghz and the AS hasn't even set yet🙂 Very pleased with the performance of this cooler

Does anyone know if the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme will fit in a Silverstone TJ03?

EDIT: The answer is no. 🙁 I did a quick measurement from the bottom of my motherboard tray to the edge of the case, and it's almost exactly 16cm - the Ultra 120s are listed as being 161mm tall. Throw in the height of the motherboard/CPU and it ain't gonna work. Sad. These coolers really ARE freakishly tall.

I have one of these cases. Can you post any pics to show the amount of clearance as I'm tempted to get an Ultra 120 but want to know just how much space its going to take.

I have a TJ08 and it just fits. Looks like the TJ03 has space behind the mobo tray. Too bad. Look at the bright side, ya got a place to hide wires
