I currently am running a TI 4200 128Meg 4x card. I am wanting to upgrade. I have 160 US $ to spend on this upgrade. I have read alot of posts about the 9800 PRO's with the downgraded interface (256 to 128) (seems most of you say opt for the 256 but then the price goes a little high for me) , but it seems these are the best cards that my 160 will buy unless I missed some . I am mainly looking on NewEgg for these cards as I know they are reliable. My MOBO is only 4x by the way. any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

XP PRO SP2
Athlon XP 2000
1 Gig DDR Ram
MSI 6367 Nforce MOBO
60 Gig Samsung HD

I just noticed they have the 5900XT for around 170 . It has the 256 bit memory and is new . It seems to do well in the vga charts. Is refurb bad? I just looked at the refurbished model and I am a little leery of only a 15 day return policy . I wll stick with a new one .

With regards to a 9600xt, it appears (on newegg) you can get 9600xts with 256mb of memory for slightly more, which you may want to consider.

Another thing to consider, are 9800 and 9800SE cards. Less powerful than the 9600xts (and less expensive) but I don't know if they're able to be modded into normal 9800s (In the SE's case) or higher at all. If so, then definetly an alternative. Anyone know?

Something else, I'm pretty sure it's a fairly accepted generalization that in the previous-gen of video cards, you want to go ATi (powered).

I guess the reason I am looking at the 5900xt is it has 8 pipes and is 256 bit where as the 9600xt does not . I realize the 5900xt cost more but I am willing to pay the xtra so I can wait longer to upgrade again. the 5900xt seems to be the cheapest one that has the 256 bit interface with 8 pipes.
I have also read a few posts saying that there is really not much to gain with a 256 MB card vs. 128MB card. I would really like to know if this is true as it might influence my decision.
