Which card to sell

I am selling a computer to a friend. I already quoted him $350 for it. My question is what video card to include. I have a:

Matrox Parhelia 128MB and a GeForce 7600 512MB.

The thing that is throwing me off is that the Matrox retails for around $300, itself.

Which card is better?

How is the matrox better, if the 2d card playing field is more or less level throughout most graphics cards?

Thanks, JOe K.

So your saying that the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400, DVI-I, VGA adapter,HDMI is better than the matrox in a non-gaming enviroment?

Also about that system build, which is a great value. I would question the quality of some of the components, like the motherboard, ram and harddrive.

The matrox card was innovative when it came out because it could drive 3 displays with one card. So if your friend needs 3 displays with decent 2d quality, there you go. It's $300 because that's roughly what it sold for around the turn of the millennium, and anyone with inventory is going to demand that. It's not like Matrox is keeping up with nvidia/ati product cycles. You can probably find 7800GTX and 850XTPEs for their original sky high MSRPs from etailers that still have some even though newer generation low end and midrange products wipe the floor with those offerings.

Just about any mainstream card from this millennium is going to have great 2d quality.

Also, the Matrox is an AGP card. Those are only going to get more expensive as time goes by.

Which one would you keep and which one would you sell for video editing. He'll only have one monitor and I want to start to get into video editing.

Non gaming environment = web browsing or 3D design? The 8400 will probably be better for both situations simply because it is so much newer. Also, the matrox card is only DX8.1, PS 1.3 and VS 2.0

The mobo is a Asus M2N68-LA http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfr...roduct=3659709&lang=en

All RAM is made by like 2 manufacturers so that isn't a problem either. And the hard drive is most likely WD, Seagate, or Hitachi. All of which are reputable.

New question:

Which is better a core 2 e6600 with a P5B or the Phenom 9500 M2N68-LA?

Thanks, JOe K.

How on earth would you know it's way way overpriced? He didn't even give us the specs on the pc. Think next time you speak :)

With the current crop of Phenoms, i'd take the e6600 over them.

Seriously quad core not as good as core2? Why are the phenoms so bad?

TLB error. But for the price of the system I linked, you can't go wrong. Even with the performance hit from the error work around at retail price, they're still competitive in terms of price/performance.

2D is Matrox's Forte. If he's using D-Sub(VGA) inputs, Matrox will provide better image quality thanks to higher quality Digital to Analog converters. In fact that was the sole reason behind Matrox's business, better analog video quality. If he's using DVI, either will look pretty much identical. Also dual or triple monitor support on Matrox is better, they've just got more options and better software supporting multi monitors.

Now as far s video editing goes, Nvidia 7600s have Purevideo which optimizes and filters the video for better playback quality but in the case of video editing, this is probably a bad thing since he'd probably want to see the purest, most original image to edit, versus some optimized version. Fortunately, i think it can be disabled.

The Parhelia is a Hybrid DX8.1/DX9 car with PS1.1/1.3 Pixel shaders and PS2.0 Vertex. I'm not sure if it would run Aero Glass, but I wouldn't count on it.

So in conclusion, if he needs analog outputs or plans on running multiple monitors
Parhelia

If he is using Vista and wants to turn on Aero Glass
7600GT

I went to office depot in store, and the lowest possible price I could get with the rebate from their configuration center was $666.00 not $366. :(

That 'slick' deal had me intrigued to say the least.

But this at one point was seriously $366 (con rebate)? If so, I'm going to check slick deals more often. I could make a killing on craigslist not to mention have some sweet machines.

yes, the deal was valid.

slickdeals is perhaps the most-frequently updated deal site right now... especially their forums, its silently over-taking fatwallet.
